Ok, now to be totally honest, I have not even STARTED to do formal exercise. The thought of being seen in public in yoga pants is just beyond what i can bear right now. But, soon.

However what i can tell you about is my past experience. Back in 1999/2000 i lost a bunch of weight and got in good shape, i hired a personal trainer and she was a BIG HELP in getting me to set REALISTIC goals, starting from where i was (very out of shape) and in a way where i could see and feel good about my progress. My fitness routine revolved around strength training - this is a very "Individual" sort of exercise - no video to keep up with, no other participants zumba-ing circles around you. I HATED the aerobic-exercise classes with a PASSION back then, because i just couldn't keep up. I hid in the back and bumbled along, often trying so hard to keep up that i'd give myself an "exertion headache", my gosh what an unpleasant sort of exercise experience that was! But when i switched to a strength-training routine, everything changed. I went at my own pace, and I ENJOYED IT. For cardio i just used the treadmill or elliptical. Months later once I was less heavy and more fit, I tried an aerobic class, and (even though i still didn't love doing it), it wasn't so bad!

Start from where you are. Do NOT feel pressure to compete with people who are already "fit." You will get there in your own way, in your own time.

it's about being our own best friend. So would you give up on your best friend......? Or would you be positive support and motivation to them........? So why not do that for yourself. It's all about what we tell ourselves...

at frustration with the gym environment, possibly with work out DVDs as well. I've also noticed that gyms and most of their classes are geared to the very fit. I'm talking about spinning. Also men in the weights section. Unlike some people I have a so what attitude. I'm there for me, and I don't care if I'm judged (if they are judging me, honestly most people are too wrapped up in themselves). If it bothers you to participate in classes where you're the worst at it, don't go. There are plenty or cardio machines available where you can train at your own pace. If you feel badly because of those around you, try to go when there are less people around (I have a friend that would go to the gym at 5 am because of that).

If DVDs are making you sad (I tried one of those mad workout ones), just tackle them slowly. Doing a push-up at 300 lbs is much harder than at 220 lbs. Focus on your gains, not what others can do.

As someone else mentioned, weight loss is more about diet (80-90%) than exercise. Exercise is the most helpful thing in maintaining. With exercise while dieting, you need to watch out for extra hunger especially after aerobic exercise.

I've yo yo dieted for,15 years now. I'm hoping it will stick this time. I won't give up, and neither should you. Many success stories come from people that previously failed a few times.

You don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up. emoticon

It took me years to realize this but it's probably 90% diet and 10% exercise for weight loss. Eat foods that fill you up ie. Oatmeal, greek yogurt. Eat every 3 hours at most.

Thank you for your response. I am glad I am not alone. I am also on day 3 and ache. It tough to stay motivated when I am sore. Someone asked me today what I did and kind of diminished the fact that it was 3 days but it is 3 days different from the old me. Stay strong and we can make day 4. Thanks again for sharing.

PS. 46 is still young.

Yes, I do not feel overweight so therefore I seem to slip a lot. The mirror and clothes size along with photos show me differently but I don't feel it. I am lucky for this because it doesn't hinder me socially or keep me obsessed thinking of myself just as fat, but I need to wisen up and get busy before I do feel every pound on my unhealthy body that got messed up by the weight and start to feel insecure. I have done really well these past three days and I feel better then I have in months. Energy is like it was 5 years ago except I was sore last night and had to take some ibuprofen. I will soon be 46 I have no time to waste, in fact I am already on borrowed time. God is good to me :)

Well said. You just have to really want to do this for yourself, then work on finding the exercise or activity that is right for you and that you can enjoy. Start out slow, don't worry about keeping up with everybody else. Chances are they were in your shoes when they first started too. Work hard to achieve your goals without hurting or injuring yourself and as you move forward you will get stronger you will lose the weight and slowly things will get easier. DO NOT GIVE UP!! You can do this especially with the support of all your Spark people comrades!!

Tom, WOW. I can completely relate. I used to be into weight lifting and powerlifting. I was pretty good too. I got sick, went through a lot of health problems, gained a lot of weight and lost all my fitness. I finally dragged my weak butt back into the gym on Sept 3, 2012. I stood underneath the pull up bar and thought "there is just no way I can drag my huge body up over that bar with my weak muscles." And you know what, I couldn't. But I tried. I used a counterweight. I kept trying. Workout after workout. Week after week. Month after month until I could do it without a counterweight. As I got stronger, I also got lighter. Things that were impossible because of my weight AND my lack of strength got easier because of my reduced weight AND my growing strength.

I'm still heavier than I was when I was at my goal weight before I got sick, but I'm actually stronger now than I was then. I can do lots of stuff that I couldn't do back then -- including stuff that is bodyweight based -- meaning that I am hauling around a heavier body AND on harder exercises -- that's a double victory.

I've lost 30 lbs since Sept 3 and that has really helped me to feel more comfortable while working out. Yes, I still have more weight to lose BUT... it takes time, consistency, and hard work. Which I am willing to give it -- after all, that's what I've been giving it for the past 6 months and *it has been working miracles*.

Please don't give up on yourself. This is YOUR workout. Don't worry about how other people would do it, or how other people would feel while doing it. Adjust it to your body, fitness level, goals, schedule, interests, etc. Don't forget to do exercise that is FUN for you. I actually stopped doing powerlifting and moved on to a completely different strength sport instead, which I think is more fun. There are so many options out there.

It takes consistency and hard work to get the results we want but the awesome thing is that if you do the hard work consistently you DO GET the results.

There is this one workout DVD I do called Denise Austin's Fat Blasting Yoga. I'm not kidding you everytime I do this one I get so freaking frustrated and mad that I just can't do some of the exercises. In my head I immediately get angry that I am unable to balance and do these two balancing postiotions that i just feel I should be able to do, I mean I've been doing yoga on /off for years. Never mind the fact that I'm at least 75 pounds overweight. I've actually cried out of frustration while doing this one.

I don't feel like this during other workouts like running or J.M's 30 day Shred. I feel like its just exercises that I feel like I should be able to easily do and that I don't have a history with.

So maybe try somethign thta you've never done before, if you were never a runner than run, or if you've never done boxing or tennis or something that you don't have a history with. That way your building from scratch and each time you do it a little harder or longer, you can celebrate the success. Just a thought.

YOu can do this, just keep trying! You only fail when you give up.

The success of a healthy lifestyle is cramped by my inability to see myself as I truly am. I still picture myself as fit even though I am 80 lbs overweight, because I used to lift weights and convince myself that it is called husky. Emotional eating and eating when I am bored is the issues that defeats my weight loss success every time. Does anyone else have disappointment with exercise?When I try to keep up with the spark videos or take a chance at the gym it is embarrassing and discouraging. I usually just give up. The workouts seem to be focused on the fit people of the world. I am trying to be honest with myself and taking another look. Any other honest people feel the same way and still hanging in there or trying again? If so, here is a shout out to you and a kindred spirit who is struggling to finally get fit.
