Probably because as a personal trainer I see it two ways , one is my processional obligation to give the best guidance I can so that people can achieve results and the second being I have had to help far to many frustrated clients who have gotten bad advice and selected the thing which they prefer (find easier in many cases) and gotten no results. They become discouraged and simply drop out often not recognizing that their problem was choosing the wrong method to reach their goals.

@Sarge- gotcha. I hear what you're saying, but there is an element of "if someone enjoys a certain activity, encourage them to do that", isn't there?

I was turned toward another web site by a friend who suggested it, and a theme was "if you don't like something, find something else to do fitness-wise". If the OP LIKES to treadmill, why discourage the OP? The OP can and probably will add ST to the litany of fitness routines.......

If you're using the treadmill at the gym on a regular basis, aka at least 3 times a week, and when it's warm running that much outside for at least a year, buying a treadmill would be great for you since you've proven you actually use it. You shouldn't buy one though if you're not working out regularly and think that it'll make you work out more; THAT is when it becomes a clothes storage device.

My post was a somewhat veiled attempt to dissuade the poster from spending an excessive amount of money for a treadmill as a piece of home fitness equipment. There are better and less expensive items which will produce better results.

Sure, but- the OP didn't ask about the 3 components, did she? She asked if anyone had any personal POV's about owning a treadmill vs. going to the gym.

She didn't say she doesn't intend to ST.

So Sgt Major's point is well taken, but not sure it was a responsive answer to her question!

If you have time to go to the gym, it may be better to keep that membership. You may want to use some of the other equipment some times.

Personally, I would rather do an outdoor walk, all year. I am in Pennsylvania, and we get some sub freezing days, but I would still rather be outside. I am a walker, but I see many runners out in the cold. When the weather is inclement, I do have a treadmill for back up. When I had a gym membership, I was only going to swim laps, so I didn't renew this year. It got really old having to make myself presentable to go swimming.....I can go downstairs and hit the treadmill no matter what, I don't need to look decent for the TV

I would definitely go for the treadmill if winter was to brutal outside.

I have a treadmill which I use in the winter, but I perfer being outside. I'm really anti gym. Just not for me!

If you're only going to the gym for the treadmills, you might as well get one for your house, and save going all the way to the gym. Working out at home is so much more convenient.

As a personal trainer I will suggest that if all you are doing is cardio you are on a self defeating course for the following reasons. Cardio is catabolic and the body burns the easiest fuel it finds which is protein meaning muscle. When you only do cardio you are burning muscle with the fat which reduces your resting metabolism. Increasing muscle through strength training increases your resting metabolism. Long steady state cardio has been found to be stress producing which elicits the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is a fat storing hormone so increasing the production of cortisol increases your fat retention.

As a final note the formula for weight control has three components which are in priority order nutrition(diet), strength training, and lastly cardio.

I love my morning runs. But when winter hits boy and I on my treadmill. I use it from the end of October till March and boy do I make it pay for it's self. If I were you I'd look into a treadmill. If running is all your doing anyway at the gym why put out the money for the membership and use it instead for a treadmill. I got mine at Sears they were having a sale. I got a proform and I really do like it. I would also check Craig's list for a good used one. I do know that Wal*Mart has them too. Good luck........ emoticon

I go to the gym for more than that. I do weights - muscle burns calories 24/7. Treadmill is second to doing the weight for me and I keep my fat off that way.

I think if you go to the gym on a regular basis and don't waste that membership, then you will likely not waste the treadmill. If you only run at the gym anyhow, and use it as a place to get through the cold (or ultra hot) months, then it is likely worth it to get the treadmill.
As soon as the Christmas bonus comes in, hy husband and I are getting an elliptical, because that's about 50% of what I use at the gym (the rest is other cardio machines) and 100% of what he uses at the gym.

I love my treadmill. It gets me through the winter months and was a major reason for my improvement in conditioning when I bought a new one to replace my broken one last September.

I personally won't make the effort to go to a gym enough to make that worthwhile for me. I also hate stationary bikes. Thus, I don't belong to a gym and don't own a stationary bike!

Buy what you like- or join a gym if you like. You need to choose something you'll do.

I've had a treamdill for years and I still run outside more then I do on the treadmill. It just depends on what you think you'l do. Running outside is much easier on my knees than running the treadmill. I do still use it sometimes though. Not nearly as much as I did when I first bought it though. You can always sell it easily online if you end not using it as much.

I think the plus about a gym membership is that you always have a variety there.

Good morning everyone! I have had a gym membership for almost a year, and while I used it in the winter when I first started walking, as soon as it got warmer out I started running outside- which I love! Right now I am really interested only in running- I do not go to the classes, etc... I was contemplating trying to find a used or decently priced treadmill, but a lot of people say that it will just end up as a clothes storage device. However, if I were to use it regularly, I would save the 40 a month on the gym. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
