My thoughts on the SP Menu. I personally am not a fan of SP's meal plans. They don't have near enough protein or fat for my liking. I eat meat (or eggs) at every single meal and the SP menu only has it listed once a day and sometimes not at all. I also eat a ton more veggies and a ton less dairy than they recommended. The plan just doesn't work for me.

I would suggest you make a weekly plan for yourself of things you like to eat. Plan to make enough at dinner so you can have left overs for a quick and easy lunch the next day, which is a huge timesaver. Then list what you'll need to buy to make those meals. It does take time the first time you do it but it pays off in the long run.

I tried using the spark menu plan when i first started in 2007. I did it for about a week and discovered it just wasn't for me. My palate wasn't mature as it should have been for my age and i found that i was replacing items more than anything. It became useless to use it.
Now that i have entirely changed my lifestyle, the SP plans wouldn't work at all. I don't cook food. i don't do dairy. I don't do whole grains and I don't do any animal products. Unfortunately SP doesn't have a plan for that and no vegetarian wouldn't work either because they still cook food and use Tofu a lot which i wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

But i do use pre-planned menus to a point. One of the websites i use has a few weeks of plans for each growing season. Again i do make some changes and I don't have to follow it day by day. I make the food for the week and choose from the stock pile.

I'm too "fly by the seat of my pants" as well. It isn't that I don't want to try various spark recipes, but I just use them in conjunction with what I have. I don't plan menus other than, meat, veggie starch is all set, I have a selection, and then enough for what I'm in the mood for. Same with my husband. If I planned a menu like that, we would inevitably eat out because we didn't want to eat something that day.

Our freezer is almost empty and ready to be defrosted. I have said for most of the winter that when the weather got warm, we were going to start using the Spark Menu full time for the summer. I will substitute items and switch meals around some, but I want to try new foods, new recipes, and I want to learn to think about food differently. I want to stop asking myself this question: "What am I in the mood for?" Food as fuel.

I am overwhelmed by the length of the grocery list. I do see a lot of things on the list that we already have. I am nervous about how much all this is going to cost. We did the Spark Menu for a week this winter. I don't remember it being any more expensive than usual. I do remember the fresh produce guys smiling and talking to me more than usual.

I like to cook. That's not an issue. Organizing and planning. That's an issue. I'm such a fly by the seat of your pants person. It's gardening season here, and it's just SO busy. Establishing priorities is such a challenge for me.

I would love to hear about others' experiences with the Spark Menu. Advice. We won't be full time Spark Menu this week, but probably next week.....
