It is ok, just start fresh tomorrow. I used to be bored in the evenings and drink bourbon just for something interesting to do. It just became a habit, but that is unneccesary calories, I was doing it every night. I have noticed that I don't miss it anymore. Spark people has greatly helped this because now I am not bored any more. I just log in and read, I am constantly learning new and healty tips and it keeps me entertained looking through the site. Try to keep busy, so you are not sitting idle. Your doing ok, just keep tracking, even on bad days, it will help you.

I don't understand why the whole family eating healthy all the time is a problem. That's what should be happening for all of you, every day, for your whole lives. There are hundreds of healthy, homemade options for everyday snacks and even treats.

No child NEEDS junk food, ever.

Honestly, if I saw a woman buying ding-dongs for her children at the store (even if they really were for the kids) "good mother" woud be absolutely the last thing I would think.

If you want to give them a special treat, why not make some carrot cake, zucchini bread, raw apple muffins, fresh berry cobbler,etc.? Maybe these things are not on your diet right now, but they are certainly better for kids than processed fake food.

I'd like to suggest something a bit different than the others did. I can tend to binge, too. I got irritated last night and grabbed a bag of cookies and ate every darn one of them.

BUT...I buy single-serving bags, so my entire 'bag' was 240 calories.

Buy some snacks just for you. My personal favorite other than chocolate are the shortbread cookies with raspberry filling. Taste great, help that sweet tooth I'll never kill, but a whole bag is still one serving.

I buy other things I really enjoy, like potato sticks, and figure the servings per bag. I decide the larger bag into that number of servings for snacks (as its generally less expensive that way)

No ome is perfect. We all have bad days and many of us are emotional eaters. While you work on the source or cause, make it so you can do that ocassional binge without ruining your whole day!

Hang in there and don't let one lapse get you down.

I can relate. Every once in a while I think I can control it and make or buy my favorite--chocolate chip cookies. I bag them up 2 at a time and put them in the freezer with all good intentions; but if I eat one package, it just sets up a craving I can't seem to control and I end up eating them all.
I found that a healthier choice to satisfy my cravings is "fried cheerios". I put them in a frying pan with a little low fat margarine. If I'm craving sweet I add splenda and cinnamon. If I'm craving salty I add garlic salt. If I still hve the option of adding nuts for the day I add some pecans or almonds. It seems to do the trick, and I can track all the items without "guilt", or without sabotaging my diet. This is actually my favorite bed time snack.

RAVENLB1- You are so right! We are changing lives a little at a time. I was feeling guilty about not having junk snacks when they are here.(I know they get them at the other grandmothers) But after reading your "Thin Within", I feel much better. They are really not deprived since I keep popcorn, nuts & dried fruits. But you would think I beat them the way they carry on. I must keep my goals in the fore front at all times.

I'm late chiming in here but want to congratulate you on your honesty and insights.
Your comments about being a "good" mom resonated because I wanted that, too. Let me share what I did to be a "good" mom and now a "good" grandmother without snack food. First, I stopped buying it, then I made a substitution:
1. I always ate a peanut butter sandwich before shopping to cut out buying junk food due to hunger in the store.
2. I gradually stopped buying junk foods and processed foods, and the gradual reduction meant that it wasn't noticed for a while;
3. I tallied the cost of the junk I did NOT buy.
4. When the amount saved got to a certain point, I took the cash and "treated" the kids to a movie or a trip to the bowling alley. Everyone enjoyed the activity more than the snack food from their "good" mom!
5. Note that I told them in advance that the outing did not include snacks, so they all got a peanut butter sandwich before the outing!

Let me add that there was a lot of whining and moaning until the kids adjusted. They even tried to embarrass me with "Ms. So and So always has a ton of the good stuff at XXXX's house!" PAY IT NO MIND. Just tell them that is so nice and go about your business. Also know that they will eat it elsewhere whenever they get a chance! But now my poor, snackfood deprived kids have children, and guess what? They are far more rigid aout what they serve their kids than I was and they started earlier with healthy eating habits in their homes. You are changing habits and thus changing lives when you, as you said, "do what's best for them. Not lead them into obesity like myself." I applaud you!

I know how difficult it is when my grandkids are here and I must keep snacks for them, So I try to keep dried fruit, nuts, popcorn and their favorite peanut butter. My granddaughter loves apples so this is a blessing since we eat one together. But my grandson wants cookies and I always end up eating several when he is here. I cannot just eat one, and he must take them home or I will eat the remainder. You might want to try dates which are very sweet. Also, raisins. I mix raisins, nuts and pretzels and they love it if I throw some M&Ms & dark chocolate raisins in the mix.
I know it is very difficult when you get no sleep and your guard is down. Just do the best you can.

try making healthier versions of your favorites and they feed them to you and your kids. I switch out spenda for sugar and the kids are none the wiser, because they don't feel cheated.

Would've been interesting to see if DingDongs contain high fructose corn syrup? I find that very often in foods where I go absolutely stark raving nuts and just inhale gobs of whatever / cookies ice cream bread whatever ... I'll go back and check ingredients and 99.9% of the time it has HFCS!! Why wasn't I paying attention ?

And one half "gallon" (those squarish 2 liter tubs) can easily be 1400+ calories... Inhaled ... Thankfully none today, but I totally understand the pain and frustration!! I don't happen to like Ding Dongs, but that is totally beyond the point! Processed foods just have all these addictive triggers - "step right up! There's somethig for everyone! We don't care how fat you get, how sick you get, we have your favorite poison right here!!" (that ought to be the truth in advertising disclaimer in front of every grocery store or retail outlet etc selling overly processed "foods" !!)

I have been working on not buying that type of stuff as wel. the family acts like they are suffering b/c there is no ice cream, chips, cakes,donuts, cookies in the house. I will buy it if its a special occasion but i have learned that is the only time we really need that stuff and yes I do think you need it every once in awhile. I have seen items on sale and think oh i should get that and think if you get it you will eat it. like buy one get one free deals. I try to buy healthy snacks or healthier ones like popcorn, protein/ granola bars, fruit
I also know how you can eat more then one or two of something i have been not very hungry and ate something and its like my brain switches from saying your full to saying eat more and i get hungry.

I totally know what you mean. I ate 3 donuts at one time and know I would have eaten more if I had more. Just yesterday I saw a program on Dr Oz where he showed how binge eating affects your organs and I was shocked. The stomach was larger than all other organs from over eating. You can probably see it online. It made me approach eating dinner differently.Now I am afraid to over eat! I wonder how long that will last! I can only hope it lasts forever. Did I feel guilty about it? Yes. BUT IT'S OKAY TO SLIP UP. I am really really proud of you for having the guts to come on here to a public forum and be real with yourself.

hi yall. my problem seems to be that when i try to think of what i can't eat it makes me want to eat even more so then i pigout and then i get depressed because i have no will power.
i think paul had a similar problem in the bible. of course his was much deeper but it is a reminder that God has already made it possible now i have to do my part. there, i just gave myself a pep talk. go figure.

I can NOT have sugar in my house. Or "snack" foods (chips, etc.) or I WILL eat them. I have zero carb control when it's late and I'm tired or hungry and etc.etc.etc. I MUST either have to cook it or not have it in the house or it's being devoured. I CAN stick to my carb controlled diet if the food is NOT in the house or I only have things like oatmeal (the real stuff), brown rice, etc. that has to be cooked. (Except when it's my TOM - which is a hard challenge for me.) ... so if you find yourself just craving those super easy sugary carbs you might want to look into if you are a sugar-holic or not... I know I am.

It sounds like you figured out where the problem lies. You are not being a "good mom" by having ding dongs available for your kids. You are being the "popular mom". :) That is satisfying, but so is having healthy kids. Hopefully it's not too late for them to learn healthy eating habits from their mom. Sounds like you are on the right track with the pop thing.

The absolute most important thing right now is to make sure this slip doesn't push you off the rails. Keep plugging away. This journey takes time. Lots of time. Celebrate your successes and move on from your not-so-successes. Every mistake is a learning experience.

Thanks to all of you for sharing so much great advice and support. And, OP, I think you are trying so hard and learning so much. I think this is going to be your time to really make your goals and keep them and your children are going to be so proud and will learn so much from your journey.

my reaction to that commercial is that the kids were disrespecting their mother who probably got unhealthy by putting everyone else first for so long. just my opinion.

Thank you everyone for all of your kind words and advice. I've come to the conclusion on a few things. First I need to NOT have that type of food in the house. Or anything that I know I will devour. When I'm at the grocery store I feel like to be the "good mom" I should buy all the snacks for my snacks that they will be excited about. (With the exception of pop. That's strictly a once in awhile at grandma's thing). But I know to really be the "good mom" I need to do what's best for them. Not lead them into obesity like myself. I guess I feel guilty when I decide I'm going to eat healthy, then the whole family has to join me. Have you ever seen that commercial where the mom is wearing her exercise clothes and hopping around the place when she goes to get her kids for breakfast? And the kids are like oh great moms on one of her fitness kicks again so they are afraid of what they will have to eat. I can't remember what the commercial is for but I laugh every time it comes on because that is exactly how I probably look to my kids.
Second, (AND I WILL ADD THAT I LEARNED THIS FROM MY SPARKFAMILY) I need to realize that messing up once during the day does not completely void the day. As I have always done in the past. Well I chose to go to Mexican for dinner so I might as well have DQ for dessert later. I still logged everything (including Ding Dongs) into my counter today. And since I didn't totally go crazy today I'm not in that bad of shape. It could've been better for sure, but it could've been way worse.
And third, and probably most important, (WHICH I ALSO LEARNED HERE) is I need to figure out why I binge occasionally. I know it has to do with not feeling good about myself. Because I don't seem to do it when I feel like I'm on the right track. I know I don't do it out of actual physical hunger. Maybe I'm trying to make up for lack of confidence by filling that void with food. I've always thought I just loved to eat and there were certain foods that I didn't have physical control over. Someone mentioned it would be unlikely that someone would binge on apples. And this is true. I always buy apples, grapes, bananas, etc. But never feel like I need to stuff those in my face.
I am taking complete responsibility for my actions and need to really work on myself. I know I can't just flip a switch and become a new person overnight. Wouldn't that be nice. I guess I need to constantly remind myself what is more important, food or my health.

Everyone has said some great things on this subject already but I just wanted to add a couple things.
Read what your eating before you eat. That really helps me! Look on the package or goodle it or look it up here on spark people.If I see high cals, sodium or fat it starts to turn me off of the idea.
And this I have said on a couple boards already but before you eat something you feel you shouldn't I always ask myself " is it worth it" Alot of times I answer myself no and put down whatever It happened to be. Or maybe take just a bite and give the rest to my boyfriend or throw it away.
Also I would just try and not keep those things in the house. When you open the fridge and cupboards it will be Lot harder to stray if you see almost all healthy items. If others in your house have to have those things stash them in the back or up high maybe so they aren't the most confident choice.
But like others said don't beat yourself up and when you do fudge up a little just get back on track for your next meal and move on.
Also I saw someone said share your weight loss goals with other people. That is amazing advice that has helped me stay on track. Because I figure if I tell people I'm trying to get healthy I'll just look like a dumb dumb if they see no change or see me not changing my diet what so ever or exercising.
A cheat here and there won't totally derail you though. You can do this! Just keep pushing!!

I think we've all had our "Ding Dong Moment!"

One of the BEST things I've learned from this site is the ability to stop, say to myself, "Hmm. Probably not the best decision I've made but I made it, they were tasty, and now I'm movin' on! Now - what healthy thing will I fix for dinner?"

Before Spark, a ding-dong moment would turn into a ding-dong day, and perhaps a ding-ding week since I "already screwed up."
Not any more! That kind of stupid, all-or-nothing thinking just sets you up for failure. Plus sometimes, I think I used a moment of indiscretion (the ding-dong moment) as an excuse to go nuts and eat everything in site.

Get back up, dust yourself off, say that phase mentioned above and get on w/ your bad self! You can do it!! Don't get too down on yourself; w/ practice, you will be able to make this whole process more lifestyle than diet and then you will learn how to incorporate the occasional ding-dong or two w/out going crazy.
Look - obviously, if we all were perfect eaters, we wouldn't be on this site, right? Well, learning to eat right is a process, and part of the process involves an occasional stumble. Each stumble is but one little trip in a lifetime worth of meals and decisions. It's part of the learning curve! You're just practicing and learning, that's all. No need to beat yourself up!

You didn't rob a bank; you're not a horrible person. You ate some ding-dongs. You WILL be fine. Deep got this!

I agree with everyone who responded, give yourself a break! You had a lapse in judgement and overindulged - it happens! Don't let this get you down. Think about all the positive changes you've made to your health and move on, get in a little bit more exercise, and remember that you're human and ergo, not perfect! And by the way, it takes 3,500 calories to make up a pound, so you didn't do THAT much damage!

You did the right thing to acknowledge it, but forgive yourself! You're awesome!!

You are asking this as if it is a rhetorical question. But maybe it should be changed from "What is wrong with me?" to "What is wrong?"

Were you upset about something? Was it an emotional thing? If so, how should you handle it the next time?

Was it a proximity thing? Were you sitting to close to the box, hearing them say, "Come and get me"? Maybe letting those naughty Ding Dongs stay on the shelf at the store would teach them a lesson.

Were you hungry? I know if I let myself get too hungry, anything can happen. I eat a lot and I eat quickly. Maybe planning for hunger with some healthy snacks can prevent this from happening again. Right now, I have a bowl of apples on the table. I ate two in a row yesterday, but still didn't feel bad about it. And oh, my gosh, yum!

Were you thirsty? Sometimes it happens that our bodies mistake hunger for thirst. Are you keeping hydrated?

Were you feeling deprived? A lot of people "diet" and deprive themselves of foods that they really like. This can be exhausting and make people resentful. When the resentment builds up, look out! You can plan to put yummy favorites into your day without blowing your calorie count. (Some people are better than this than others. Know yourself.)

I don't know anyone who hasn't had a day where they have gone totally of the rails. Learn what you can from it and move on. Add some extra to your workout, and try to make sure you get enough protein and fruits and vegetables to keep your body going for the rest of the day.

You are NOT a bad person because you ate six ding dongs. But, you do have to start asking yourself some difficult questions. Why did you eat six when you could have had one ? Were you bored ? were you angry ? have you been under any emotional distress ? When a person is under a lot of stress, many will turn to food for comfort.

If you are an emotional eater, then you need to find other ways to relieve your stress that don't involve food. Have you read any of the great spark articles on emotional eating ? If not, I'm going to post a couple for you to read. One simple thing you can do is drink a BIG glass of water. Some times hunger isn't really hunger, but thirst. So, try drinking more water. It will help keep you full.

Don't beat yourself up because you ate too much. You really do have to your best to try to control your portion sizes. Also, if you can't control your portions just yet, then the Ding Dongs have to go. Out of sight. Out of mind. if the food isn't there, you won't eat it. go out and buy some fresh fruit for times you would like a snack. If you feel like overeating. have an apple or two or three. I have yet to meet the person who could binge eat apples. If you're going to over eat anything, at least eat extra portions of fresh fruit and veggies.

It can happen to anyone but I commend you for posting and taking the first step of accountability...plan today careful with lots of low calorie foods that can help you stay in your calorie range. It's not the individual binges that keep us from our goals, so much as the shame and depression that follow. Be proud that you reached for help. Do a bit extra for fitness, such as some arm circles, to use those extra carbs to build some muscle. Walk a bit more today, even if just around the house. Be sure to take a moment to feel good about what you can accomomplish today.
Know there are people here to support you, struggling with you, and depending on your support back....we can be successful together :)

I am right there with you. i understand the pain and guilt of over indulging. last night i had a small bag of sour gummy bears. i am an emotional eater and find when i am frustrated with my weight plateau i reach for the bad stuff

I just ate 6 ding dongs..It was like I couldn't stop. What is wrong with me??? I'm so disgusted with myself. That was 960 calories.
