@Deb, I live near a harbor so pretty much everything is uphill from my house.

This is interesting for me right now, mainly because after too long road-running I've come to the agonising decision that it's not for me, and I have to go back to the treadmill. I've realised, the hard and painful way, that my body is just not built to cope with the hard unforgiving surfaces when running outside.

I've tried running on grass verges when they are available, but the routes I have to take are mainly pavements - and also, when I did try the grass verge I almost turned my ankle because the ground was so uneven.

So, rather than give up running completely, I've decided to re-join a gym so I can make use of the treadmill again.

And I am actually quite looking forward to getting back on there and trying out all the different programs, both in terms of speed, incline and intervals.

Let's hope it's more gentle on my body than the pavements.

I begin the incline on 3 and work up and down from 3-12 throughout my cardio workout. I probably average 6 most days. For some odd reason my knees like the incline and boy, the calorie burn does too emoticon

I expect a lot of our perception is just what we are used to! I live in an area that has gentle hills, so an incline on the treadmill feels quite normal.... I usually change it frequently during my workout for variety. And in all but the crappiest weather, I do the outside-real-world anyway! emoticon

I went by perceived effort (since I don't feel the need for an HRM at the moment) and 1% felt a lot closer to the real world than no incline at all. Funny how it differs from person to person.

I did a test on that theory with my HRM.

I found that, for me, no incline at all most closely approximated road walking. Using 1% incline was a higher burn consistently.

Because yes, it makes a difference!

I'm a morning workout person so that means treadmill for running since I'm up *way* before sunrise most of the year. I did my interval workout today and added the 1% incline that people say makes running on a treadmill closer to running outside and boy does it. I'll have to do that more often. emoticon
