I'm Canadian but I rarely see maple sugar so I really don't know what you're talking about with this question, sorry emoticon I didn't know it was an issue.

WHY does Advocare tell you to avoid sugar? Is it for nutritional reasons or for philosophical reasons? Both of those are valid, but they'll likely lead to a different answer on this particular question.

If it's purely about nutrition and bodily function, then sugar is sugar is sugar. If the point of avoiding it is to balance your blood glucose or trim calories or re-train your taste and pleasure responses to demand less sweetening, then white sugar, brown sugar, maple sugar, HFCS, honey, agave-- they're all the same.

If it's about avoiding overprocessed foods and getting closer to natural and whole foods, then there might be some wiggle room on the maple sugar. Maple sugar isn't necessarily more nutritious than other sugars, but the only thing removed from it in processing is the water, so mentally it might seem more "natural" than white table sugar or HFCS. In some programs, that mental difference matters.

And then there's also the matter of practicality. Did you already buy and open the almond butter? If so, then I vote for using it instead of letting an expensive product go to waste. The amount of sugar is small, so if that's the only added-sugar product you're using, it shouldn't affect your results. If, on the other hand, you don't have an open jar around, I'd say try a different brand for the 24 days so you get the mental boost of sticking to the letter of the challenge.

Maple sugar is still sugar.

That being said, I don't avoid sugar, at all. I like it and have cut my portions significantly. I definitely don't avoid it.

Real maple syrup is not a "hint of maple taste made in part from tree sap." Real maple syrup is made 100% from boiled down sap taken directly from maple trees. Believe me, I have done plenty of what is called "sugaring" and I know exactly how it is made.

Even though this sounds "all natural" boiling it down is a form of highly processing and concentrating this form of tasty "sugar."

I'm not familiar with exactly how sugar (from sugar cane) is processed, but sugar is sugar. A little bit now in then in your foods won't hurt you (that is my opinion) but white sugar is no better or worse for you than maple syrup.

I don't know anything about this Advocare thing, but.... maple syrup IS sugar. It may be in liquid form, but it's going to have all the same properties as corn syrup, granulated sugar, agave nectar, etc. etc. etc.

I am on the Advocare 24 day challenge. There is a brand of almond butter that I like that has maple sugar in it. I know we are suppose to avoid sugar, but I was wondering if maple sugar counted or not.
