That's the thing, you really have to watch how things are labeled. "Wheat" does not mean the same thing as "whole wheat." "Multigrain" is not the same as "whole grain" either. As long as they aren't calling it "whole wheat bread" then they're not technically lying or concealing anything. It is misleading for some people but not necessarily intentionally; after all "wheat bread" is the proper name for a bread that isn't white.

Remember Subway doesn't say their food is healthy. Just that certain types of their sandwiches are low in fat. They try to give off a "healthy" vibe but they don't actually make any claims to anything. Even with the whole Jared campaign there was usually fine print about "diet and exercise." I give them points for being among the first fast-food restaurants to even talk about nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. But it IS a fast food restaurant and as consumers we have to remember that they are trying to sell something, not make us healthy. That part is up to us emoticon

It always looked and tasted like fake bread to me. They use bread filled with chemicals because it's cheaper and there's no spoilage. It's so much better (and easy) to make your own sanwiches.

Subway is still a better choice than most fast food places though

You can find something wrong with EVERY fast food restaurant

They have the ingredients right on their website under nutrition. I've looked it up. The bread is not whole wheat and does have HFCS, see for yourself at I am currently on a Subway strike. Also don't go for a wrap instead they have over 300 cals each.

HFCS = high fructose corn syrup.

You would think Subway would have a healthy bread without all of the things listed here.. I frequently eat there and always get wheat bread. Is it at least the less of all evils?

If you're looking for whole grains, Subway's wheat bread is not the way to go. When I make bread I use unbleached flour, water, yeast, 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar and sometimes spices. That's it! Not sure what's up with this mile-long list...

Some of their breads (though not the wheat) also contain azodicarbonamide, which is banned in Europe and Australia and if you use it in Singapore, they fine you $450,000 and up to 15 years in jail!

SUBWAY 9-GRAIN WHEAT: Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, barley malt, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, yeast, high fructose corn syrup, whole wheat flour, wheat gluten, contains 2% or less of the following: oat fiber, soybean oil, salt, wheat bran, rolled wheat, rye nuggets, dough conditioners (DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate), yeast nutrients (calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate), degermed yellow corn meal, rolled oats, rye flakes, caramel color, triticale flakes, parboiled brown rice, refinery syrup, honey, barley flakes, flaxseed, millet, sorghum flour.

HFCS may be bad for you and I don't eat it, but I guess the official jury is out on how unhealthy. However, what my searching for nutritional information showed is that ALL of subway's breads are made with enriched flour, which is refined and not good for you. That would make it NOT whole wheat or whole grain for any of their breads. Ugh.

As another blogger put it, I'm sticking to the salads!

I have been reading that Subway's "wheat bread" is not really whole wheat bread AND is made with HFCS! Does anyone know if this is true?

I eat a Subway turkey sandwich on wheat once a week, and other than the sodium, which is not a personal issue for me, I thought it was a pretty healthy meal. I would like to know for sure what the bread is made of.
