I also walk my son to school - 1 1/2 mi total in 2 roundtrips (am & pm).

I don't count the walks are cardio but I do count them toward the 10k steps I get in everyday.

In the spring, he'll start riding his bike so I'm planning to jog alongside him. I'll probably count those runs as cardio (depending how fast he rides his bike!).

Its 10 minutes there 10 minutes back with a few minutes wait between....i do find myself getting sweaty...but i think its more to the fact that its hot outside. My kids walk a little faster then the normal kids...but i think i wont add it in. I dont feel like im working out. Thanks everyone for the advice

How fast does your daughter walk? Are we talking waiting on an 8 year old to keep up with you, or what?

Basically, if you were doing a 10 minute walk purely for exercise, would you do anything different to this walk? Would you walk faster?

Some utilitarian things count as exercise even though you don't do them 'for exercise'. If you put your sweat pants on after you got home and went and did exactly the same 10 minute walk, you'd count that wouldn't you? So why not this one?

Do you have to wait around for the daughter? Cardio really should be sustained in at least 10 minute increments, so if you mean 5 mins to walk there, and 5 mins to walk home, are we talking about a couple of minutes in between where you're resting again?

I agree with all the people who say it depends on how briskly you walk. I was once told to call it exercise you must sweat. To be totally honest that isn't true, however you do need to raise your heart rate. On your way back try some light jogging :)

I'd say it depends on how briskly you're walking. Knowing how I walk with my kids, I probably wouldn't log the walk back with your daughter, as that likely isn't getting your heart rate up. If you walk there quickly enough to feel it, then you could log the first 10.

I think you should be logging it. It won't increase your calories burned too much, but it's still something.

Ok, dumb question...I walk 20 minutes everyday to go get my daughter from school. (10 there 10 back) Should I be logging this as exercise? Or is it already accounted for in my "light activity" calculations?
