I think with the appearance of all these techno gadgets, people are forgetting how to speak to one another face to face without Icons, text speak, email and acronyms. Conversation is an art for both the speaker and the listener.

Having conversing skills takes practice. That's it.

A technique I use are follow-up questions; this does three things for me, 1.) it let's the talker know I'm listening, 2.) It briefly interrupts them and keeps them "on-track" if they're the rambling type and 3.) It gives me a break so I can have time to digest what they're saying.

lol I can think of a few people like this, but sometimes I myself have to be the interrupter because i also know people that go on and on and on (especially my mother)

It's a bad habit that I have been guilty of. My husband will pause and I think he is done, so I start talking and it drives him crazy. Then he won't finish and pouts. Now I have to ask? "Are you done?" He really is a slow talker and that is just as maddening. If someone is really boring, I won't interrupt, but I do quit listening. I've heard one man at work tell the same story 50 times. I just let him tell it, but I can't have much of a reaction.

We all need to work on our conversational skills.

I know many people who do that. Sometimes I start talking really fast so I can finish before they interrupt me. It doesn't always work though. It is VERY annoying.

I can be that way. I have to remind myself to stop talking and listen.

Yes I do know someone like that but her version of interrupting is to jump in halfway through what I am saying and repeat the last portion of the sentence along with me. I really like her but I cannot stand that particular habit. The only reason I can think she does it is that it is her way of agreeing with me? Hell I don't know.

I can be that way sometimes because other people are often so darn SLOW.

I really have to practice my listening skills when in group conversations. I tend to be an interrupter otherwise. It's more respectable that way. I have a good friend, who is also an interrupter, so when we get together, we both let loose. I only do it with her, because we have such a ball when we see each other. I really don't think interrupters think that their opinions are more important, rather than they are always thinking ahead. I was once told that interrupters don't hear other people, but I disagree. Annoying as they are, they keep the party happening. How boring is it when you engage in conversation with someone who has no opinion or says nothing -- now that's more awkward to me.

Just my New Yorker opinion.

Probably most of us know somebody like this. I tend to usually be on the quiet side, slow to work my way (or force my way) into a conversation. Sometimes I feel I have something important to say, or to add to the conversation, but nobody ever stops talking long enough for me to say it.

I think that is one reason I like discussion forums. I can add my two cents without feeling that I have interrupted anyone!

I've had 3 types of people do that to me.

One was a co-worker who would barge into an office and interrupt the middle of a business discussion without waiting or apologizing afterwards, but he would get furious if someone interrupted him.

One would always say: "I wanted to tell you before I forget".

One was obviously not listening and wanted to change the subject

LOL! This is a line from one of the bird characters at Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room and when I heard it I literally LOL'd.

I started to think why this was so funny to me and then it hit me, a close co-worker of mine is constantly annoyed that I keep talking when he's trying to interrupt me, he even said to me, "I already know what you're going to say so why do you keep talking?"

Know anyone like this?
