I know we have all heard it but trying to lose weight is like putting money in the bank. It doesn't seem like much, one buck at a time but it adds up! I try to keep my head down and work for the prize.

That is exactly how I felt this morning! I have been working harder this week than any other week and the scale didn't MOVE! I was so frustrated and upset! I know in my head all the reasons that it may not have moved but it takes a while for my heart to accept it. I am trying to focus on the other positives about my journey....more energy, emotional health, clothes fitting better, more confidence, more endurance! I know this is a long road and I need to be patient with myself. Thank you for the original post! Just what I needed today!
This is slightly personal, but it might be related to where you are in your menstrual cycle. I sometimes retain so much water toward my period, which, coupled with PMS, usually has me near tears on weigh-in day!

I just wanted to add to the great comments......salt. Now that I am eating better, salt really affects my body as in scale moving the wrong way. Keep up the hard work.

Thanks for sharing your frustration over your one pound gain. I also had gained a pound when I weighed in on Monday and I was really upset. It was tough because I was feeling so good about myself until I stepped on that scale. The more I thought about it and processed it I decided I had to stop letting the scale dictate how I was feeling. My health has improved and I feel so much better since starting back on my healthy eating. That is what I (and all of us) need to keep focused on - not the number on the scale.

You could also try switching up your exercise routine and increasing your protein if you tend to eat on the low end.

Don't get too bummed out - if you have been working out a lot, you could be gaining muscle mass, even while losing fat mass. And don't forget - muscle is denser than fat, so 1 pound of muscle takes up less room than a pound of fat. If you aren't already, keep track of other measurements...you might see you are losing inches even when the scale is going up.

Thanks so much for all of your replies. Since I posted I have actually noticed a little change and the scale is going back down- but more importantly I feel energized and my clothes are starting to get loose. Something I did add to the mix was doing a better job of tracking my food. This way I know if I'm not eating enough or eating too much. What an encouraging bunch of people you all are! Best of luck to all of you in your journey to be/stay healthy.

This is my current problem too. I finally fell off one plateau only to land on another one, but I have increased my exercising and training too. Looking forward to the next "drop"

One thing to remember too is that muscle weighs more than fat. I try not to weigh myself as often as I used to because our weight fluctuates throughout the month and throughout the day. I use how my clothes fit as a gauge. My scale hasn't moved much, but I've lost 1/4 to 3/8" from my waist, thighs and arms. My pants are starting to fit better too. Another thing to watch for is how are you feeling about yourself? Since I started exercising, I feel much better. I have a better attitude about everything!
Give yourself some more time. Remember it took time to get where you are now, it's going to take time to get to where you want to be. Also, remember that you have to make this a lifelong journey. If you don't make a lifestyle change, you won't be able to get it off and keep it off.

The same thing happened to me. Weight fell off with healthier eating, but when I added exercise to the mix, the scale barely moved for an entire month. After that month though, I started to see it really move again.
Hang in there, and keep doing exactly what you're doing! You'll start to see changes soon, and I bet you already feel healthier :)

I worry about the "lower in carb" comment. If you are working out, you need to make sure you are getting enough carbs. That's the fuel our bodies run on. Fat can be used as fuel too...but not very effectively. So, don't avoid carbs too much...or your body will start behaving strangely.

Continue your journey. Weight loss isn't just about losing weight. It is about becoming healthy overall. For instance, maybe your glucose and cholesterol levels have benefited. Maybe you've lost inches that the scale doesn't show. Maybe your confidence has increased. Maybe you can walk or run better than before. Please don't be so hard on yourself. Be tenacious. Be strong. When you start doing more exercise, your body begins storing more fuel in your muscle cells, where it can be used easily and quickly to fuel your workouts. The process of converting glucose (carbohydrates) into fuel that your muscles actually store and use (glycogen) requires three molecules of water for every molecule of glucose. As your muscles are building up glycogen stores, your body has to retain extra water for this purpose. That's what causes most of the initial weight gain or lack of weight loss. This is a good thing—not something to worry about.
However, despite what the scale says, you are actually losing fat during this time. The extra water retention will stop once your body has adjusted to its new activity level. At that point, the scale should start moving down. You'll end up with less fat, and muscles that can handle a larger amount of work.

So the last two weeks I have been killing myself at the gym, taking classes and getting in some weight lifting/toning. I have a protein shake for one meal a day and the other two meals are pretty nutricious- lower in carb, veggies, fruit, protein. At my weigh-in today I gained a pound. I'm so frustrated. I know my weight is going to fluctuate a bit, but why am I not losing?? I'm working so hard. Can someone please explain?
