No, not exactly. But unless you cook meat for a long time, the size does not change that much.

That is a good question - how much meat do i start with to end up with 3 oz cooked product?

RIET69 - I understand the portion size once the meat is cooked. The problem I'm trying to sort out is that I made a recipe and the "serving" of meat cooked down to a pitiful size. I'm trying to figure out how much raw meat to start with to end up with a cooked portion the size of the palm of my hand. Do you have any idea?

A serving of meat or fish is about the size of the palm of your hand.

This post about raw vs cooked meat in a serving might be too old to revive, but I had the same question. Now my question is: If the 3 oz. is to be cooked meat, how do you determine how much meat to cook in a recipe to come up with the correct serving size once it's been cooked? Also, I guess when you enter meat into the recipe calculator, you have to be careful to select the calories for raw meat?

I've been managing my nutrition for 88 week. Through the first 30 weeks and 65 pounds of loss, I did a lot of guesstimation along the lines of the excellent referenced article. However, then calorie allowances began to shrink much faster, and I found I needed to weigh or measure the volume of everything I consumed, and my own weight, and exercise output. I told my wife that the only thing I wanted for my birthday was an accurate kitchen scale that measured in grams and ounces and that automatically subtracted tare weight.

That little gem is the best purchase we've ever made.

This morning I weighed in at a weight that my wife of 43 years has never before seen me at.
That scale is one of a hand full of tools that have not only made over 100 pounds of weight loss possible -- but relatively comfortable.

Five factors in establishing fitness: plan, execute, *MEASURE*, record, adjust.

SP provides many planning, recording, execution (e.g., fitness exercises, recipes), and adjustment tools. The weight and kitchen scales are two, that I think that each user will be better off with.

Just one guy's opinion ...

Generally you would measure it after it is cooked. If you haven't seen this article on portion sizes, you may find it helpful:

I am confused as to when to weigh servings of protein. Do you measure it before or after it is cooked?
