That is an interesting idea. The thing about that, though, is that my registered race time would be slower. I am a bit competitive, even if I won't ever win anything. Thus, I like my 28-minutes or better 5k times races, and if I did that I'd probably log in a 32-minute time, or a bit slower!

I like the idea of doing the runs with your kids, that sounds really nice. Have you ever considered going for a run before hand, so that your speed at max effort was about the same as theirs?

Depends on your goal. An example:

My kids like to run a race or 2 with me every year, and we pick out a target race together that we run together. So far, I am faster than they are, so I slow down and we have a good time running. Some day they might be faster than I am, but for now it's their race day and I adjust.

They know that I will target a few other races that will be just "for me". My half-marathon and a local 5k series are ones that I do myself for my personal best. If they want to do any of those 5k's, my wife will sign up and be backup.

Conclusion: Compromise. I get my handful of races a year that I try my best, and I give them a race or 2 that we can do together for family fun and to encourage their health and fitness.

During a race you should always try your best. But during training you could try to run with her on some days at her speed and then go on your own other days. Another idea is to go with her at her pace for your "warm up" and then do some extra miles on your own at a fast pace after she is done? The other thing is maybe this is her nice way of telling you that she needs some alone time. I like getting out on the road just by myself...

Agree completely w/ NHOYLE1. It's a race, do your best. If you two want to be together, run at home or participate in an untimed race.

Reverse the roles, would you want your wife to run w/ you when she could be placing? I know I wouldn't. I'd want her to do her best.

Is this during a race or just on your general runs? Because to me if it is a race, you run it as fast as you can.

For runs with the two of you, it really depends on your goals. For me, I want to push my cardio as much as I can, so I would run ahead. But it sounds like for you it is as much about the camaraderie. If that is the case, I would ask her at another time if your being there is upsetting her run. If she says it is upsetting her, leave her alone and find someone else to run with.

My wife and I have started running together. I like running with her in a race and it's just for fun but she wants me to run ahead. I am faster and she has to slow down sometimes.

She says she'd rather listen to her ipod and I like being with her so I really don't know if she's trying to be nice or really wants me to go ahead. I ask and she seems sincere, so I guess the question is, if your a competitive person but love being with your wife, what choice would you make if put on the spot?
