Update: The pain continues and has extended into the breast. Some days it hurts a lot and other days it doesn't. I went in today for a mammogram amd ultrasound of the breast tissue. Results were clear which is one less worry for me. The doc said the tendenopothy in the rotator cuff can cause pain to the pectoral muscles and into the arm pit. She also stressed getting a better bra that is not underwire. She also said the will help the most but it could take 6 weeks for the pain to subside. I guess I will just keep up with PT and give it time!

Keep up posted here how the PT goes. It's pretty common for people to slouch when they get tired on long runs, and that puts more stress on the cervical nerves. Holding good posture then should help.

thanks for all the tips. i'm going to give it some time to see how things go. When I give it rest it seems to improve. I just hope to be back to running before too long!

Have they also done a cardiac workup? Back, shoulder, and arm pain that feels like a muscle strain can be a sign of heart issues in women, and most doctors-- especially male doctors-- still don't recognize those symptoms because they're so different from men's. It's probably NOT that, but it's something that should be checked and ruled out.

They only scanned the shoulder. There was no nerve damage detected by the EMG. They suspect right now the winging and posture is likely the cause of it all. They did not check for disc herniation that I know of. And yes the winging is just on the right, which is where all the pain is. And yes the longer/farther I run, the more likely the pain. We also wonder if my stance is too rigid while running, causing me to use the muscles incorrectly. I may need to relearn now to run and use all these muscles. Perhaps its just built up over time!

The winging scapula is just on the right side, correct? That's a big clue, and your orthopedist should try to find the cause of it. The most common cause of scapular winging is damage to the nerve that powers the serratus anterior muscle (holds the scapula in place). If that nerve was damaged near the cervical spine (cervical radiculopathy), it could explain your other symptoms. Slouching during long runs could make that worse.
Do you know if they checked for cervical disc herniation in the MRI, or did they just scan the shoulder?

The pain is intermittent under my arm and in those muscles, but my shoulder/scapula hurts more frequently. Right now they think the muscles around the scapula (due to winging) have lost strength and get inflamed when irritated and that pain is radiating or deferred to under the arm. They think the repetitve running may be irritating it and that overtime it finally caught up with me. I noticed shoulder pain over the last 6 months on long runs, but it usually went away a few hours later. Right now they reccommend PT. At first I was scared it could perhaps be breast cancer related but the pain was only in the muscles under the arm on the side, not constant and not in the actual breast. We've not done a mammogram and we've felt no lumps so they think it is primarily musculoskelletal at this point. I have good days and bad days. I notice the bad days to be after a workout. Bummer since I love to run and am currently not running to give the muscles some rest.

The only time I ever experience pain in that region is after arms/chest workouts but it is a soreness that goes away after a day or 2. Good for you for getting to the Dr. to have it checked out! What did they suggest for it?

For the last 2 months I've had pain around my scapula, around my shoulder and armpit region into the muscles near the right chest (no pain in the breast, just around it). I've had am MRI (showed tendonitis & bursa), an EMG (proved no nerve damage) and ultrasound (showed nothing). They also discovered my scapula wings. The sports medicine docs are now reccommendig PT. The pain under my arm into the breast muscles is intermittent. Some days it is there and othes it is not. I've found that running increases the pain in all these locations. I had ran 26 miles each week for the past 2 years up until now. They think it's the scapula muscle causing pain under my arm into the breast and in the shoulder as they've ruled out the other stuff. Has any one else experienced this?
