why not slow down instead of running each mile "as fast as you can"?

Like NANLEYKW said, a better approach is to get all the mileage done at once, no matter how slowly you go. Jog the first mile at an easy pace, walk for a few minutes, jog some more, walk, etc.

Most training guides say it's more important to get your body ready to cover the mileage at once, even if you have to walk. If you're only interested in burning calories, it's fine to break it up the way you did, but if you want to build endurance, you'll definitely need to run/walk.

Calories burned-wise you are fine. You ran 3 miles.

Fitness-wise not so. Running 3 miles with two 20min breaks is not the same as running 3 miles nonstop.

But this is not to discourage you, quite the opposite: I would keep doing what you are doing, gradually reducing those 20mins of rest (but never too soon!). Over time, you will find that those 20mins of breaks will shrink to nothing, and you will get to run whole 3 miles nonstop.

I've been running for not quite a year, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think you'd be better off following a run/walk program (like Couch to 5k) to build up your endurance until you're able to run the whole 3 miles. That will have you running for short distances, then walking a bit, gradually increasing the length of time you're running until you reach your goal. I would also suggest that you don't try to make a 10-minute mile, since you're just getting back into it. Run at an easy pace, and you'll be able to last longer. The speed will come back as you build your endurance.

When you say "taking a break" does that mean walking for a little while or stopping completely. If you're just lowering your intensity to a walk you're actually just interval training, which is great! I think as long as you're getting it in, it matters little that it's not all at once. Way to get back into running again! Have you thought about taking your run/walking outside? Running on the treadmill for me is much more challenging mentally (I get bored).

First of all, way to go by getting back to running. I too have gone back to it. I find for myself that I can do the 3 miles all at once if I slow it down a bit and not sprint. I would try doing that. Great job though. Your time will come back down once your body remembers that it can.

I am recently getting back into running. Unfortunately I have gained about 20 pounds since last September. I used to run 3-4 miles all at one time. Usually averaging about 10 minutes per mile. I just bought a new treadmill and I find it very hard to keep running for the whole 3 miles so I walk in between. This weekend I did something different. I ran one mile as fast as I could. Then took about a 20 minute break and then ran another mile as fast as I could. Another 20 minute break and ran the last mile as fast as I could. I managed to do each mile in 10 minutes which is good since I am just getting back into it. Is doing it this way as effective as doing the whole 3 miles all at once? There is no way I could run 3 miles all at once in 30 minutes. Any advice would be helpful.
