See the thread,, "Broken leg in strength class." My fitness instructor broke her fibula near the ankle when she slipped on leaves this fall. She hobbled into the class three days later and did the routine as best she was able. She did triceps, biceps, back, shoulder, one-leg dip and calf raises, 20 minutes of ab/core sit-ups exercises and more.
She did not miss one class throughout the entire healing of her broken leg. Now the walking cast is off and she is beginning to walk around with a limp. She did squats and lunges with both of her legs last Friday (two days ago), and she'll be there on Monday.
A broken body part does not mean that you quit exercising. It means you adjust by being creative and resourceful. It takes determination and commitment.
I was swimming five days after laser knee surgery, and walking/biking two days after surgery for trigger finger. It can be done. Be wise, careful, and smart.

What about strength training? As long as you're not lifting anything too heavy that may put too much pressure on your leg and ankle, it may be a good option. SparkPeople also has chair exercises you want to check out in the video section.
I'm not sure if this has been addressed before but during the summer I broke my fibula (in my attempt to try roller derby as a form of fun exercise). The break required surgery and now I have a long plate (with 10 screws) holding my bone together.
Well, instead of being smart about my injury in relation to my weight loss, I totally fell off the wagon and used it as an excuse to eat poorly (although many times it wasn't totally my fault as I was pretty helpless and couldn't make food for myself for quite some time). Needless to say I ended up packing on a few (more than a few) pounds in the past handful of months.
I was recently released from my doctor's care and have been walking as much as possible to continue stretching everything out (in addition to fracturing my fibula, I completely dislocated my ankle and tore the ligament on the inside-it also required surgery to be sewn back together), but I'm still getting some minor pain. I've been doing some of the WATP DVDs as they're low impact and manageable, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on similar DVDs or other low impact programs that wouldn't put much strain on my ankle. I'd prefer to stay out of the pool and gym for now so anything that can be done at home would be preferred.
As some additional info, prior to the break I was a HUGE fan of kickboxing, but since I'm still getting some minor swelling after the walking DVDs, I don't feel I'm at the point where I can pull off a workout like that. Are there any low impact DVDs that incorporate light kickboxing moves? I also have issues doing yoga because I have weak wrists so as much as I think something like that might benefit me, I'm not sure I would be able to do it. Basically, anything that isn't full of lunges or squats and doesn't put a ton of strain on the ankles would be perfect.
