The power (ashanga) yoga will build nice muscles. It looks very difficult (from the class I've seen at a yoga studio). It's much easier to start with weights, IMHO. Regular yoga will make you very flexible, which is a nice along with weights and cardio. Or so I've read, I'm far from being in shape.

Somewhat off-topic comment to follow: I use to totally write off yoga because I pretty much thought that it was exercising while relaxing and no effort at all, that is until I did the P90X yoga. Holy CRAP! Yoga is hard! I'll take pumping iron any day ( a walk in the park compared to yoga).

Look around for options. Ashtanga yoga is very strenuous and can help build strength. My local yoga studio has a yoga with weights class. If you are very out of shape, a strengthening yoga class might be a great way to build up to strength training.

No it cannot replace strength training but it compliments it really nicely! Give your body an all over great stretch -- helps avoid injury.

No, it can't. Yoga is primarily about flexibility and balance. Even the poses that are strength-related are generally not effective enough to build strength at all. Yoga is primarily about flexibility. It's a great exercise, and I encourage everyone to do it, but you are not going to improve strength or provide enough challenge to preserve lean muscle mass the way a full-body strength training program will.

It depends on what type of yoga and what poses (I don't think it's fair to say yoga is just about breathing and stretching). There are some yoga poses that I would say are strengthening - plank, chaturanga, lunges (with your knee lifted), down dog.

No it doesn't. Strength training is building lean muscle mass. Yoga doesn't do that at all.

I don't know but Yoga sure kicks my butt. To me it is more core training. I guess you could check with a trainer.

I don't think it can, I believe strength training is an entirely different form of exercise, yoga is more like stretching with breathing techniques, and putting your body into different poses whereas strength training works the muscles harder and helps build lean muscle.
