I also noticed a discrepancy on the Nutrition Tracker and potassium. I was tracking potassium and had TWO ranges showing up on my tracker, one being 3500-4700; the other being 4500-6000. Here's the response I got from Dietician Becky:

Let's begin with the first question. Since I know the answer to that one...
Our regular Sparkpeople program uses a potassium range of 3500-4700.

Our Sparkpeople Heart Healthy Plan and or Diabetes Plan uses a potassium range of 4500-6000. This is because potassium is so important to these conditions and therefore the recommended amount is higher. In fact, potassium is automatically added as a nutrient to track for the heart health program.

That's correct. But don't be too concerned. Most nutrition labels don't show potassium levels, so unless you're eating a lot of junk, you're getting more than is being reported to the tracker.

It is possible to OD on potassium, so don't run off and start taking supplements just yet. If you start having symptoms on potassium deficiency, you might want to start taking a supplement, but as long as you eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and go easy on the alcohol and soda, you should be okay.

Symptoms of potassium deficiency can include:
Muscle spasms/cramps
Muscle weakness
Muscle tenderness
Heart palpitations
Abdominal bloating and cramping
Extreme thirst
Lots of peeing
Dizziness and fainting

Hi, All: Are we really supposed to have between 4,500 and 6,000 mg of Potassium each day? I'm consistently coming in with levels that are far below that. I've pulled a list of foods that contain Potassium, but I don't think that I can eat enough of them to meet the recommended level without blowing my allowance of calories and not meeting other levels.

Is this a problem for anyone else?

Is the recommended number really somewhere between 4,500 and 6,000, or could this be an error?
