A year ago in January I was diagnosed as insulin-resistant, which I believe is the same as pre-diabetic. My fasting blood glucose was over 125 almost every morning. The doctor told me to lose weight, exercise an hour a day, eat a high-fiber diet and eliminate refined sugar and flour. I added two cinnamon capsules a day and did what the doctor said. I've lost about 100 pounds and my A1C last month was 4.

I still give in to the temptation to eat cake and ice cream once in awhile, but in general I try to get my carbs in the form of fruits and vegetables and whole grains. I'm careful to eat protein at every meal and try to intersperse snacks and 15-minute exercise bouts throughout the day to keep my metabolism at maximum level. I also do cardio 30 minutes six or seven days a week.

I still have weight to lose and this is still a struggle, but I think I can count myself as somewhat successful in fighting off diabetes.

I just received a letter from the American Diabetes Association that states "nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and 7 million of them dont even know that they have it." I was one of those people that didn't know I had pre-diabetes until I told my doctor how difficult it was for me to lose weight.
I am curious just how many Sparkpeople have learned they are pre-diabetic or diabetic and follow a low carb, low sugar, low sodium, low fat diet. How many found it easy to lose weight once diagnosed?
In my case, my levels have been normal for over two years now and I still follow a diabetic regimen so my number always stay steady.
