It happens... don't beat yourself up about it! I actually allow myself a "cheat" meal or two a week. That helps me keep on track the rest of the time. Otherwise I self sabotage and think well I blew it and then one bad food choice turns into a whole bunch.

I struggle with pop as well. I'm on day 2 with no pop!! For me, I don't make a distinction between diet and regular. Even though diet pop has no calories, it can prompt you to crave more sugary foods. If you do eat/drink something that you regret, don't let it get you down. Be sure to log it into your food tracker so that you can see how it affects your daily total. I have been logging my food for the last week. It really opened my eyes to just how many calories I consumed in beverages.

For me, personally, I never drink soda. I drink water or tea. I also can't drink diet (the artificial sweeter gives me headaches).
Do you use the tracker? That might give you incentive enough to stay away from soda (cause it would have to fit in with you daily "budget"), or you might find that you can fit one in per day and still stay in your range.
Do you get your 8 glasses of water in a day? I wouldn't count soda as water - but that's just me. You can try those crystal light things to add to water if you don't like plain water.
The easiest way to not slipping up, for me, is to not have it in the house to begin with. If you need to, do a clean sweep of your house and throw out all the crap. If it's not there, you wont eat it!! When going to the store, stay to the outer edges - that's primarily where you will find your fruits, veggies, meats, whole grain breads, dairy. Stay out of the snack food isle!!
Don't waste time feeling guilty - it doesn't burn any calories!!

I been cutting back on my pop doing baby steps where I'd drink sprite only if I really needed pop well today I drank half a can of diet Pepsi and to top it off had a brownie and some chips I feel guilty that I slipped up any tips on keeping on top of my food
