That's awesome. The Penzeys moved but looked like it had closed from the road. Wooden Masala Dabbas are very cool, but some of them are just a collection of aluminum cylinders and they are convenient but not so cute.

Ahh! The Indian food store I thought had closed had actually moved. Really well stocked! I found fresh curry leaves too! I found some recipes calling for pomegranate powder and found a nice little package. It's all pretty affordable too.

I would love to have a masala dabba. I think they're beautiful.

The Spice Goddess link was a good jumping off point.

A well stocked Masala Dabba usually has: Cardamom pods, Turmeric, Garam masala, Cumin powder/seeds, Black mustard seeds, Coriander seeds, fennel seeds, and fenugreek.

Thanks for the link, Sherry! I too, love Indian food. I just went to a local international market that had some indian spices. The local indian market has closed, unfortunately.

Indian food is made up of a lot of different spices. Here are a couple of links that I hope will help to demystify it for you. They are both really good shows and the food is easy to prepare. Both of these cooks say that in India, each family has it's own mixture of seasonings for the garam and tikka masalas. They do give their recipes for them. They can have anywhere from 6-16 spices in them. Enjoy !

there is a spice mixture I think called garam masala... Rachel Ray has mentioned it before and said that you can sometimes buy it in the bigger grocery stores or mix your own...

Hi Guys,

My husband and I just discovered that we LOOOVE Indian Food. When I try to make something at home I always use curry because that's the only indian spice I know. Please let me know what other things are essential for the Indian pantry..

thanks a lot!!!
