Vegan AND Paleo is a tough one to navigate, but I bet you could do it with lots of care. I don't recall beans as being a Paleo food, but I could be wrong on that....and if you are vegan, beans almost HAVE to be your good friends! I would really, really suggest that you don't take Dr. Oz any more seriously than you would take any other reality show crazy that is just trying to fill space between ads for Burger King and Tampax. Also, your nutrition class may be slightly off when it says you "need" 100 carbs per day. There are whole cultures out there that did just fine (certainly better in terms of dietary-based disease) by eating almost exclusively meat. Your body makes glucose from the other things you eat, so technically carbs are actually the one macronutrient that you can survive (and thrive on) even if you get none. Carbs are a healthy part of a healthy diet when eaten responsibly (beans, very whole grains, veggies, low-sugar fruits) but are not 'needed'. If your nutrition teacher doesn't know that the liver can make glucose from the fat and protein you eat, then your nutrition teacher needs to go back and study basic biochemistry again. The idea of Paleo is the eat the way that our distant ancestors might have eaten. Note, I wrote 'might' because much of the data on how paleo-humans ate is pretty speculative. A true Paleo experience would involve eating bugs, lots of dark greens, tubers, ALL parts of animals (yep, even brain, marrow, kidney and spleen). I would recommend that you compromise and find something that works for you in terms of nutrition, carbs, calories, ethics and lifestyle.

Oh, and great idea to take a nutrition class! But....question everything....nutrition research is one of those areas in science where it is really hard to do a well-planned experiment that gives a meaningful result....consequently, most nutrition information is hearsay and speculation....but it is the best we have right now!

That's completely fair - with the proper knowledge and self-education and planning, no diet is impossible and people can thrive on a variety of diets.

I am concerned that the OP has decided to make an overnight switch to a very restrictive combination that she claims makes her confused and dazed, without doing the proper research and getting the knowledge she needs to ensure she does it in a healthy way.

Unident- no I am just straight vegan raw. I posted here since it has similarities to paleo. I don't consider vegan raw as restrictive though. I get all my protein and carbs and other nutrients just from different sources.

But you're not doing vegan raw paleo, are you?

There would be a much tighter restriction on what foods you can eat if you go vegan paleo, than if you simply go vegan (or vegan raw).

Taking on two very restrictive food approaches at once, combined, is probably not a good idea. Pick one - go vegan or go paleo.

For someone who has been vegan raw for the last three years-- I have absolutely no problem getting in my nutrients and protein using fruits, veggies nuts and seeds. It takes time and planning and you have to really want to work for it. It took me a few months to get the handle on it but now that i started sprouting, i have no issues.

Take this for what you will, but vegan paleo would be INCREDIBLY restrictive and as someone completely new to this restricted diet, you will be very hard pressed to get enough nutrients. You're essentially limiting yourself to fruits, veggies, and a few types of nuts (which paleo recommends you limit if you're trying to lose weight).

Please reconsider doing such restrictive diets until you've done your research and can be sure you're doing it in a healthy way.

Don't worry about Dr. Oz's dire warnings. He's not a trustworthy source of information regarding diet and exercise, and is a known corporate shill who will hawk whatever supplements he's paid to, regardless of their actual scientifically proven efficacy (or lack thereof.)

I'd put the 'Dr' in quotes except for the fact that before he started on TV, he was a respected heart surgeon.

1) There are plenty of foods that count as "vegan friendly" that aren't grains but still have adequate carbs. (Beans, vegetables, fruit, etc.)

2) There will ALWAYS be conflicting data out there with regards to diets and diet plans. Pick what works best for YOUR body and stick with it. :)

I am trying Veganism this month and now I am worried about not doing the Paleo diet.

Dr. oz Paleo diet.

Food is 1/2 plate of non starchy vegetable, portion protien, portion fruit, portion of fat

My concern in Nutrition class, they said the brain needs 100 gm. carbs to function properly

Dr. cridain on Dr. oz talks bout leaky gut and auto immune disease

They said Dairy , whole grains, legumes are inflammatory foods
