I don't believe in going on diets and off of diets. I think that just sets us up for yoyo dieting. Back when I used to go on crash diets for events and such, I would come back and gain all the weight back and then some. So personally I have to live in a way that I can keep it up.
I believe Spark People is correct in telling us that we shouldn't go below 1200 calories a day.

There are a lot of experts out there and they all know the magic potion that will work and be just the ticket. Some people will do well on some of their plans, some people won`t. That is why there are so many diet plans and schemes out there. If they appear too restrictive to you, then they are. If they seem too good to be true, then they are. If you are skeptical, you should be. Losing weight is hard. Every person has to find the way that is right for them and commit to it. For me 800 calories a day is unappealing for lots of reasons and just to be clear I can eat 5 cups of vegetables and likely could 3 times a day, I have a hearty appetite, I don`t let myself eat everything I could eat at any meal, ever. I find that I can feel pretty good at 1500-1600 calories per day and lose weight very slowly by increasing my exercise. This is what I choose to do. Recently in the news, there was some discussion about losing weight quickly as opposed to slowly and restricting calories extremely, evidently science and medicine want us to lose weight any way any how and keep it off. I am Canadian and this was on our national news sometime ago, a month maybe. So when deciding to diet and exercise it is important to get your advice from a source that you trust, that works with your personal philosophies and then stick to it. Stick to it, even when you don`t feel like it, which I believe is the hard part, doing something when its not easy or interesting or fast or whatever.... If someone told me that they wanted to do a 800 calorie diet I would wish them well and carry on with what I am doing. If it seemed to work for them I would wish them well and carry on with what I am doing. 800 isn`t for me, but I am just one person

I have never done bob harpers jumpstart to skinny but I have done something similar to it and i don't believe i ever went over 1000 calories and i was NEVER hungry. it wasn't a diet either. It became a way of eating for me. It helped me see that i was eating wayyyyy too much meat and that 3 ozs of meat didn't seem like much at first but then it became more than enough. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to eat alot of calories to feel full. What is more important is where the calories is coming from.
And just so we are clear on this, this plan is for people who want to lose some weight for a type of event or something similar. But however, Bob Harper assuredly knew that people would want to use it for something other than that and therefore at the end of his book he has a transition on his 'skinny rules." so that you do not gain all the weight back.
this book isn't for everybody but i do believe that it gives some insight on what we should be eating. Eating all them vegetables may not be for everyone but some people enjoy it and honestly, i would rather have vegetables for a snack (which will be feeling and good for me) than something that is going to leave me hungry even after i just get done eating.
all this being said, I am thinking about trying it myself and see how it goes. it may not be anything permanent but i am hoping that it will help me incorporate more and new vegetables into my meals.

Sure everyone is different. I know a couple people their appetite is similar to mine. So I'm not alone.
I do love veggies, I just never feel full when eating them. One day I ate an entire head of brocolli and I was still hungry. I just positively love asparagus and I can get that bunch from the grocery store and eat the entire thing. And I would still be hungry.
I usually take studies with a grain of salt. When I did experiments in School, I could always tweak them to make them agree with my hypothesis.
I really like veggies now. I can't seem to get enough of them. Lately I have been stir frying them in coconut oil and just a tiny bit of salt and pepper and then serve them over brown rice. I cook them and they are still crunchy.
I used to be a fast food junkie. I can't eat that junk anymore, nor do I crave it anymore. Once you eat healthy and stay there, your body will crave fruits and veggies. It's amazing how our bodies know what is really good for us.

Nope - not even good for that. I started with approximately 100 to lose, and had been consuming - honestly I have no idea, 3000+ calories a day at minimum. Trust me, dropping from that, to 1200-1550 serves the "jump start/stomach shrink" purpose just as effectively. And yet isn't so stupidly low that one will physically suffer. Going lower in the hopes of making a "better" start is actually counterproductive, as if anything, it will drive people totally away from making any changes at all. Been there done that with the "this is just too hard, if THIS is what i have to do? i'll make peace with being fat!"

I.... actually really LIKE veggies!
But they are... shall we say... inconvenient. Shopping and storing, peeling and chopping, blanching and boiling and roasting and sauteing... it's time consuming. But it's yummier! I really really really do enjoy my food more now, I really really am more satisfied! Soooooo why would I ever *stop* eating this way? Oh, so many reasons. Laziness. Convenience. And of course "once you get used to fast food, it becomes what you crave, and you can never get enough."
But! That aside, I do agree with you Ethel, that these "plans are made for someone to make money off of poor distraught people...." I TOTALLY agree. It's almost criminal. In fact, in some cases, it probably is.

Why doesn't anyone ever notice, that after years of pushing veggies at us, I don't care how many you eat, they just don't satisfy, especially day after day after week, after month? They just don't taste so danged wonderful, so you eat them only because you have to, and, at some point, for most everyone, you gotta go off the wonderful "plan" and eat something good!!! And it's been going on for years, if veggies are that great, no one would ever stray from eating them all the time. These eating plans are made for someone to make money off of poor, distraught people, time and time again..........don't eat this, eat that, drink this, go to the bathroom extra, blah blah blah. There should be a law against these people, if it was GREAT, you wouldn't need to push it all the time.

This jump start may be good for the person that has to lose over 100 pounds and shrink their stomach but for the average middle aged American looking to lose 30 pounds I think this is dangerous and setting someone up to yo yo diet. You have to be satisfied with what you eat to make it a lifestyle change. It shouldn't be about losing weight for an event only. No one sticks to a eating plan that has restrictions for the long haul.
I would literally DIE if I ate 800 kcals a day!!! I LOVE food too much!!!!

It is outside the scope of practice for a personal trainer to move into the role of nutritionist. Frankly, I question what credentials he truly has or Jillian for that matter. Everything they do on the show would make a fitness professional cringe.
If he were certified through a reputable organization such as American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Assoc, American Council on Exercise or any other high level accredited certifying body, his credentials would probably be revoked.
As far as I am concerned, any very low calorie diet must be done under strict medical supervision.
Simply stupidity and recklessness preying upon the "loss at any cost" mentality.
@MANDIETERRIE strange that you say ' If I eat a starch, which is not allowed after breakfast on this plan. I feel full." because most studies have mentioned that starches INCREASE appetite, .....but I guess everyone is different.
My cravings have diminished since I've cut out most starches.
I'm not supporting Bob Harper's diet philosophy but I'm suggesting that replacing starches with simple carbs (particularly non-starch veggies) would give someone a lot of food and severely cut back on calories. they would get plenty of nutrition...and they would probably NOT be able to finish off a plate of 250 calories of non-starchy veggies. For most veggies 250 calories would be about 5 cups worth of veggies. When you think calories, you also need to think in terms of the nutritional value of what you're eating. Telling me that I must cut out a specific item just makes me grumpy and want it even more.
I have a High School reunion coming up some time this summer. And while I would like to lose the extra weight. I would rather do it with 1300 calories. Just thinking about 800 maximum makes my stomach rumble
@OBIESMOM2 thanks for suggesting YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. I watched the Lisa Apston story on YouTube and loved it. Proof that where there is a will there's a way...we just have to be open minded.

I totally get what you mean, Sheryl. There have been times when I fixed breakfast and figured I had a good 300 calories, but it was WAY less when added to my nutrition tracker because it was all high quality food (eggs with a LOT of veggies, for instance).
I loved watching "You Are What You Eat" on BBC. Gillian McKeith always showed the side by side 'you can have this...or you can have ALL of that' for the same calories. (episodes are available on YouTube)

I would rather work it off than diet it off. Who wants to be skinny anyway? I'd rather be fit and bigger than considered skinny.
I am not advocating a super low calorie diet but if you maximized eating non starchy veggies, and no starches, few fruits, and only very lean protein with 20% healthy fats ... then it is very possible to eat 800 calories for 3 weeks to jumpstart a diet. And you would be amazed at how much food would be on your plate. for instance...egg white omelette with cup of red bell pepper, cup of fresh mushrooms, and half cup of lean ham = 210 calories ... versus... egg mcmuffin 290. But look at all the food with the veggie omelette vs the egg mcmuffin. A cup of your average veggie is under 50 calories...but who would eat 5 cups of veggies for 250 calories.
It's about choices...if you are desperate to lose for an event ...you don't have to starve. and I think that's Bob Harper's point

I saw that. I wonder what his credentials are to write a book about a VLCD? I suppose he is a licensed trainer, but I don't know that he has any real nutrition training.
I would lose my good humor on 800 a day and my family would be begging me to eat more. In fact I am usually starving at 1200. And only feel full around 1300-1400. I am also losing weight in that calorie range
