Once upon a time (four years ago) I was 20 pounds heavier than I am now (which nudged me into the obese range on the BMI, then I chose to make some lifestyle changes (which included joining SP). Now I've regained almost half the weight I lost and so I'm recommitting to getting into the healthy BMI range. I will resume making healthier food choices and get back into the daily exercise habit. I will live enthusiastically pursue life's adventures!

Once upon a time I would go to the gym a couple times a week, walk on the treadmill set at "just barely moving" for 20 minutes, and go home.

But now I go to the gym 5 or 6 times a week for aerobics, Zumba, Pilates, and weightlifting! My health is better and my bones are stronger!

Someday I'll run a 5 K race.

.. I married a prince. I have a bad history of heart disease, his family did not. So I figured my children would have a good chance of overcoming heart disease. I watched as my husband ate fish, and veggies and worked out with weights and even jumped on the trampoline with our 4 children. Then one day BOOM he had a heart attack at 51. Just goes to show you EVERY thing you put in your mouth can become a risk, a little snack here or there can 1 day become a big problem. At this point we have decided to protect our children as of TODAY, with a new diet for a lifetime together !!!

Once upon a time I compared my self and my success or failure based on someone else I wanted to be. Now I realize it is okay to be me and am working to be the best me I can be and celebrate my successes!

Once upon a time I was a pack+/day smoker, ate too much junk food, drank too many beers, and sat on my butt on weekends. Unhealthy doesn't begin to cover it.

(Got rid of the excessive cigarettes, alcohol, junk food and laziness - now I'm working on nutrition and setting a good example for my children.)

Now, I am working on eliminating all of those thing so that some day I can look at my lifestyle and be proud.

Once upon a time I was on the right path to losing weight and getting into a healthy lifestyle, then I got sick and the end result was a major surgery that did a number on my body. However last year I took off 15 and hopefully this year I will be able to get off the rest.

Once upon a time I used to sit on the sofa eating potato crisps and drinking wine while watching all those lovely fit people competing in athletics championships on the TV. Now I'm out there doing it for myself (but I still sneak in to watch the athletics...!).

Once upon a time I was tired all the time; too tired to play with my son, too tired to go to a party with my husband, too tired to exercise, too tired to prepare a healthy meal. I was in denial and living without joy.

Now I embrace reality, make the time to exercise, eat healthy, and have found the joy in living again.

I am so grateful to be where I am, and to know that I am committed to healthy living...the future does not scare me anymore.

Once upon a time I blamed my husband for me being overweight. I wasn't fat till I met him. Now I know I gained weight because I stopped being active and got older so I can't eat like I used to. Once upon a time I went to the gym 5 days a week, took long walks, and even ran sometimes. Now I'm lucky to make it to the gym once a week and I don't work out with weights like I used to. Now I know why I've gained weight. Yikes! No wonder!

Time to give this fairy tale a happy ending :)

Once upon a time, I felt guilty every time I put something into my mouth that tasted good.
(Mom taught me that) Now, even though I'm still a compulsive overeater, I make better choices a lot of the time. This will be a life long challenge for me, but I'm so lucky in so many ways, I no longer obsess about it.

Once upon a time...I was unhappy. Because of abuse I had suffered I let myself feel sorry for myself. I convinced myself I was ugly and I didn't deserve to be happy because I had caused all the problems in my family. I let myself get fat, I withdrew from people and activities. I stopped caring about myself. Then I met a man, who saw me as beautiful and over time convinced me I was. He helped me open back up, helped me believe I was worth the effort again. I began to take care of myself emotionally and now its time to take care of myself physically.

Once upon a time I would have diet coke for breakfast and binge on pasta and chocolate and fast food and all sorts of "treats" every evening. Now I only drink water and tea with salad for breakfast and all sorts of treats like veggies and fruit all throughout the day :-)

Once upon a time, I was a fit child, but then I got bigger as high school progressed. Back to a healthy weight as an active adult working in construction. Slowly (quickly??) got bigger with each pregnancy, three total. Not quite as big with my middle daughter because I worked out regularly. Got sick and the weight just kept coming, even after recovery, and third child.

But now I am trying to get back into fitness and healthy eating, and I can. I can teach my children healthy habits (have been from their births, they love fresh foods!) I can get back into a healthy weight (even if it's not what people think I "should" be). I can get outside to hike, bike, swim, surf, garden, all those things I used to love to do all the time. I can stop further damage to my body. And someday, I will...

Once upon a time I was an unhappy child who pinned all her hopes on growing up and making all my dreams come true, love, good life and people who would care about me. Now I am past all that and some of it came true but a lot of it didn't. So I have to enjoy what life is left. I am in good shape for my age, almost at goal weight, I am loved very much by my second husband and we have enough though not much more. This is the time I need to work on loving others more. I need to give with all my heart and soul. I can not give much materially but I need to be thoughtful and kind. Absolutely no back biting or complaining about inconsequential things.

Once upon a time

I was an active alcoholic. I didn't eat well and I was bloated and puffy oftentimes because of all the beer I used to drink.

Now it's almost 2 years later and, having gotten to a secure place in my recovery, I now feel empowered to deal with the weight gain that happened back when I was drinking. I've lost a bunch of weight already, and it's starting to be enough that my goals suddenly seem attainable, like something I can see in front of me and not a tiny speck in the distance.

Once upon a time I was my proper weight. It was a long time ago and because of excess skin, etc. I may never be back there again, but I WILL be as close to it as it healthy and possible.

I was gaining weight instead of losing. I couldn't hike with my friends on long hikes through the mountains. I wasn't sleeping well and I took medication regularly for acid reflux.

Now -- I can hike with my friends, I'm not fast but I can keep up with the group, my sleep is better and my acid reflux has improved. I haven't met my goals, but I have lost over 20 points and lost 3 sizes in pants. So I'm making progress!

Once upon a time I convinced myself that I was too busy to exercise (2-3 jobs, planning and saving for my wedding). Once upon a time I ate almost everything on the run, convincing myself that I was so busy I would burn it off. Once upon a time I wore nothing but short-alls and overalls because they were the most comfortable. Little did I know that wearing big baggy clothes would entice me to eat more.

Once upon a time, it was harder to breathe.
Once upon a time, I made as few trips up and down the stairs at home as possible.
Once upon a time, it was a tight squeeze to fit in the bathtub.

Now I navigate the stairs freely, as I need to. I flip around in the tub to get my hair washed. And I can take deeper breaths, as needed. Thank you, spark people.

I love this thread so far! Super positive and uplifting in spirit and there are so many great success stories (whether big or small).

Once upon a time I was a high school athlete (rugby!!!) and was physically capable of lugging anything around. After some time the more inactive life of cegep and university combined with massive life stressors, lack of time, poor diet, and ever worsening depression combined to make me miserable, 30+ pounds heavier, and unable to function let alone get out of bed without succumbing to panic attacks etc.

Over time I uncovered the healthy eating wisdom I knew from childhood, worked on overcoming what stressors I could and ameliorating those that I could not and realized that I had a magnesium deficiency which was making everything worse. Now I can greet most days with a smile on my face and a productive work ethic. I've lost most of my extra weight and I've been walking to and from work regularly (30min).

Someday, I will increase my strength and endurance level and participate in a mud hero event.

Once upon a time, I got winded walking up a flight of stairs, and sometimes my chest would hurt. Now I can go at a pretty good clip up a few flights, with no problem.

Once upon a time, I said "I don't run unless someone's chasing me." Now I can walk/jog for several miles. I'm slowwwww, but I can do it.

I spent my day planning my next "treat" and hiding my food stash from my husband and children. I had given up on diets because I couldn't stay on them for long and I always gained more than I had lost. I weighed more than many NFL players. Now, I'm 95 pounds lighter and at my marriage weight of 30 years ago. I love you, Sparkpeople.

Great topic!

I used to spend a lot of my days napping/resting because I was so tired and suffering from a myriad of diabetes complications. I would have to tell my kids to play quietly so mommy could rest. Now I do anything they ask, go for walks, bike rides, even play on the monkey bars at the park.

Today I'm a healthy non-smoker, who wakes up & runs 8 miles for fun. And proudly cooks healthy super foods from scratch, with love, to fuel my family. emoticon

...I could not clean my house without getting winded and sore the next day and had to pay a kid to mow the lawn because both hubby and I were not up to it. Now, we scrub the place in no time, argue over who gets to mow (Who does that?), and use that $25 a week at the farmer's market. Someday, I will run a marathon.

The pace of weight loss is often frustrating. While many of us still have a ways to go to achieve our ultimate goals, I find it helps to look back on how far I've come.

What is your "once upon a time," "but now I can," and "someday, I will..."?
