Hi Archimedes,
I am a Nordic Walking instructor based in the UK and just posted an article about Nordic Walking and Balance on my blog a couple of weeks back. It includes some balance exercises you can try in your Nordic Walking sessions.
Maybe you find them useful.

Does anyone have any other balance exercises you use during your walks? I would love to hear your tips and ideas!

The sticks did help improve my walking work out. I felt I was able to push myself to move faster. It was a lot of fun.

When I was out doing my Nordic walking, an older woman did ask me if it would be good with people with balance issues. I told her it could be helpful as well as something she might enjoy. Many nordic walking websites will tell you that it can help with balance and stability. It is a popular activity for many older people in Europe.

I have been considering it lately. I have some mild balance problems, knee problems, and am getting older. I have no trouble walking, but would like something to get my heart pumping a little harder. Running is a bad idea for me because of the fore-mentioned problems. I am thinking that the poles might add more "vigor" to the exercise without increasing my fall risk.

But I haven't seen anyone address the balance/stability issue yet.

My gym offered a Nordic Walking class a few years ago. I loved it. The lady who taught it is Linda Lemke aka The Nordic Walking Queen and she's an expert in the field. She is a lovely lady. I have attached a link to her website. She blogs and has other great info.

Thank you so much ARCHIMEDESII I hope that your injury gets better soon. I live near a forest and have just googled and seen that they is a group there, so will look into it. Thanks for the advice on the poles, as I do not want to spend much especially when starting off

I've been running off/on for years. However, because of an injury, I've taken up Nordic Walking. I've been doing it for about 4-6 weeks in place of running. It's an excellent low impact cardiovascular workout. great for the upper body.

Will I run again ? Eventually, but for now I'm nordic walking. You can find the poles on Amazon. You don't have to pay a lot either. I only paid $22 or so with shipping. There a poles that will set you back $50 to $75. That's too much for me.

There are also videos on YOUTUBE to help get you started. If you enjoy walking or hiking, you will probably enjoy nordic walking.
