The constant "cycle" of self recrimination for my "failure" at self-control is such a DEAD end! After being at "goal weight" 16 months ago, I'm back up to the highest I've ever been without a pregnancy on board. I so want to get off this track into a "hole"!

Sugar and wheat flour DO make me fat--it is not a matter of overindulging. If I consume ANY sugar or flour, I will not lose weight. Even one serving in a day is enough to cause me problems.

Since I do not want to be stuck hovering above my goal for the rest of my life, sugar and flour are not a part of my diet right now.

people always say they are fat because they eat too much, but no one ever asks why they eat too much, or why they crave food, which is not normal. For many it is sugar, and flour, so yes, eating too much is the problem, but if sugar and flour are the cause of the problem, you do need to eliminate them.

Trying to just stick to less calories, when sugar and flour are causing cravings is impossible, and what ends up happening is that the person feels like a failure, even though the real failure is the idea that cravings are normal, and that one should just practice willpower, when simply cutting out these foods, which aren't necessary, would get rid of the cravings, and allow you to eat less calories.

Yes. My internist told me to do so, and that launched a successful attempt to lose 80-ish pounds and keep them off. It really does work, and it's only really hard in the beginning.

Two days a month, I allow myself these things. And, I feel pretty sick and depressed the next day. It happens every time (yet I crave these things), and it happens without exception, so that's the effect I get from abstaining from these things most of the time and indulging in them a couple days a month.

You've presented exactly what my issue(s) are! I have NOT been able to avoid bingeing on anything SUGAR in particular. (I would say for all my life.) And now it's messing seriously with my whole "balance". Time to say GOOD-BYE due to profound negative impact.

If I could eat sugar and flour and not binge I would, but I can't. forty years of trying has taught me that. Each person has to learn the best way to eat for their lifestyle and metabolism.. I was never able to not binge until I gave us sugar and flour.

That being said I have had binges since then, but after nearly a year of that regimen only by not eating sugar and flour can I go any time without binging

I truly envy people that can eat everything in moderation. If you have had similar experiences I fully encourage you to give them up. If however you can eat effectively without giving them up, more power to you and good luck in your routine.

I personally feel better when I eliminate flour and sugar - they are triggers for me and cause my cravings for unhealthy foods to sky rocket. I've been gluten free since Christmas and have pretty mcuh eliminated sugar, although I do allow myself some really dark chocolate now and then and occasionally some organic maple syrup - white sugar - nope! Whether or not you should eliminate them from your diet is a personal choice. My best advice is to try it and see how you feel and then add them back in one at a time and see how you feel. Your body will give you the answer.

I practice no added sugars, no flour 90% of the time.

For me eliminating things that aren't healthy for me is important and necessary. The less added sugar you eat the healthier you'll be for sure, my sweet treats are fruit and 80% dark chocolate. I do eat gluten free flour a couple of times a week. What can I say, I love a good crispy, thin crust pizza!

For me, making changes that will last involves NOT eliminating things just because they contain this or that ingredient. Sugar and flour don't make me fat... eating too much does! Knowing how these things affect my body is good, but if I want to make lasting changes, I can't tell myself I can't have things... otherwise, I crave them all the more.

Today is day#1 for me to "keep it simple" and make changes that will last!
