Just begin with what you can do. Can you do one lap? So do a lap and rest. Do it again. Next time try to get an occasional 2laps before resting. Build up.

You should probably see if there's a swim coach or group or classes you can take in your area. Learning the proper form will be very beneficial.

I am not an amazing athlete but I do like to stay active. I had previously done the couch to 5K program and I enjoyed that interval training a lot. I have been trying to find something similar to guide me into being a stronger swimmer. I have kickboards and pulls available at the pool so I could incoorporate those. I do much better with a specific plan. I've never swam laps for exercise before so I don't know where to begin.
