Yes, the label says to refrigerate after opening. My Jif does not say to refrigerate, Makes you wonder what is in the Jif to preserve it.

My understanding is that you need to refrigerate almond butter but not necessarily peanut butter. I switched to almond butter about 2 months ago and love it, but immediately noticed the "refrigerate after opening" label on the jar. Ya it kinda sucks because it is harder to spread, but not as bad as you'd think. I've gotten used to it. I don't know WHY it says to refrigerate it when it doesn't say to for peanut butter, but I did just because that's what it said...

I have natural peanut butter that I've had for over a year and never refrigerated it, even though it was past the "best used by" date. If you knew you were going to use it, and you feel better about refrigerating it, get it out a couple of hours before you use it. That way it won't be cold.

I think if you keep it in a dark, cool place like a basement, it would be cool enough, I would think. emoticon

It depends on where you live, what the weather's like, and how fast you use it. An open jar of PB can turn rancid pretty quickly in warm weather. Basically, you need to treat it like regular butter-- it can stay out for a little while in a cool but will turn funny after a few days.

You could try keeping the jar in the fridge and then just scooping out a few days' worth to keep in a littler jar or plastic container on the shelf.
