My parents and fiance always forget about my diet! They are happy I am eating better, but they still offer me fatty, fried foods. When I say no thanks, they say "oops sorry I forgot"! Sometimes I take one bite if I really want it, but not much more. They have not asked me to go to a buffet, but I know how you feel. It is one thing to go to a restaurant, but most of the foods at that buffet are very unhealthy! I would just tell her thank you for the offer, but you prefer to eat somewhere else with healthier options. It is hard for everyone else to get used to the different lifestyle!

Is it possible that you are reacting to your own fear? Your Mom might really be completely oblivious to how you are feeling about the restaurant.

Make it an opportunity to talk with her about your new fitness goals. Heck, you might even be motivation for her to make some changes, too.

Your motto says it all progress not perfection! I eat at GC...The salad bar is awesome, they have fresh fruits, and they have veggies that are NOT cooked with tons of fat. It does seem to vary from one restaurant to the next.

My weakness there is the bread rolls. If that is an issue for you, make sure you take one and eat it last. You can do it! AND you will feel so much more successful after you do. Eat strategically and balance the rest of your days calorie intake with what you choose at GC!

I feel you , mine cracks up every time i dance because she thinks is funny i move my arms and smile . like im performing but that is actually helping me .

So a couple of so whats made her realize i was serious ,some people like to sabotage whom they love , i dont know why :(

Ok, I've calmed down and gotten over how betrayed I felt by my mother's suggestion. I really thought about how this is a lifestyle change and if I'm going to still have a life I need to learn to eat out. So I went to their website and I am concocting a cheat sheet and battle plan. I'll try to make all good choices and I will stop eating when I am hungry.

I took my mom's idea as a personal attack instead of her desire to just go out with her daughter and grandkids. I just know how I used to be at this buffet and I am scared.

You know, there is no reason you couldn't have gone to the Golden Corral or any other chain restaurant with your mom. You don't want to keep saying,"no thank you" to social events because you're worried you'll eat too much. That's no good.

No one says that you have to clean the plate when you eat out. We know that most restaurants are notorious for servings plates that could easily feed 2-3 people. What to do ? Eat half and take half home to enjoy for dinner or lunch the next day. Split an entree with mom or a friend. Once again, most plates have enough food to feed 2-3 people. So, two people could share a plate and still be full. I split meals with a friend all the time.

You can make better choices. We know that fried foods are high in calorie, so we try to avoid those in favor of foods that are grilled, baked, steamed or stir fried. If I were eating out at a steak joint, I'd have a sirloin with two servings of veggies or one side of veggie and a baked potato. steak tips are a good choice too. skip the fries unless you think you can portion control the fries.

You really can eat out and still be healthy. It's just a matter of practicing portion control and making better choices. not perfect choices, better ones.

Don't worry about eating out with mom ! Enjoy yourself !

Old habits die hard...especially if it isn't foremost in her mind to eat healthy. She probably didn't give it a second thought. So here's where you can calmly say, mom that doesn't really fit into the healthy lifestyle goals that I'm setting for myself. How about we eat....

Save the pent up frustration for the gym and lift those weights!

I guess it made me so upset b/c if she is trying to be supportive she would be a little more considerate and not make such a crazy suggestion.

I didn't know this restaurant so I had to check online.

Remember that actually, this is not a diet but a lifestyle! You can go to the restaurant but be careful with what you eat!

So, I saw it was a buffet and that there is vegetables and low-calories stuff. You have a lot of great options here!

Congratulations for doing great. However, remember that there is always the option to make good choices, even at the restaurant. Anyways, the day after you'll be back into your lifestyle and doing great!

If you don't like when your mother asks you if you go to the restaurant, you can tell her. Maybe you can say that you prefer a healthier restaurant. Since you tell her everything about your journey she will understand. Maybe it was only an innocent mistake from her.

If you don't want to go there, all you had to do is say "no thank you" or, like zorbs mentioned, suggest another place to eat.

I do understand your frustration but remember that this is a lifestyle and that includes eating out from time to time. We can't give up food entirely so it is important that we learn to manage it, which is sounds like you are off to a great start. So I agree with the other poster and politely decline or take it as an opportunity to practice healthy eating in a different environment like a restaurant. Good Luck.

I am only a week and a half into my true new self, doing great, watching calories, exercising, sharing with my mom and my fiance' ..... things seem great.

Then my mother texted me today and asked if I wanted to go to Golden Corral. wth?????

I'm so irritated and aggravated and disappointed in my mother right now!!!!!

How about afterward we take my recovering-alcoholic brother to a bar?!?! AAAAAARGH!!!!!
