To be honest I don't have any morning motivation lol. BUT when I do get up early I always have such a great day!! so I guess that should be my motivation.

Its HARD - I get up at 415 all weekdays and today I just didnt have it in me and my plan is 6 am sat and sunday and sometimes I just cant do it... I have to get better with it and stick to it....

I think if you're not doing it every day, trying on Sunday--possibly the one day you feel entitled NOT to--is kind of self-defeating. I just started the 28 Day Bootcamp. It begins with a week of 10 minute low-key exercises. I get up, drink water and coffee, visit the bathroom (very important!) and then do the video before breakfast. 10 minutes is no big deal, yet afterwards my mood and energy level are vastly improved. Sometime before lunch I go for a good walk, and often a shorter one before supper if my SO can't walk the dog at that time. Think about doing that or something similar for a week or so. (A dog is a GREAT motivator and there are millions of dogs that need homes!)

I agree with RHYMESWITHBABY. Afternoons at the gym pack out so early that when I get off work there is no place to park, let alone a bike in spin class. My morning classes (5/week) have participants much more dedicated to working out than socializing. Most of us have to get in, get out and get to work. Our instructors know we are there to exercise at 5:30am and use it to motivate us. The best part is that after work, I can go home and spend time with my DH because our workouts are behind us.

Exercising revs me up in the morning, too, and the feeling of accomplishment stays with me the whole day.

I can't sleep unless my workout clothes are on my dresser. I also get up and do other things ( get lunches ready, get my vitamins out, track my food and exercise for Spark People) before I exercise. As the commercial says "just do it" - the rest of your day will get can get in the way of exercise.

I lay my workout clothes right in front of my bed so I see them when I get up--reminder to get things moving early-along with my bottle of lemon-infused water to drink first thing. Very motivating!

As long as you are getting your full quota of sleep -- seven to eight hours, then I would get up and go walking with your friend. Think of how much it would mean to her and help her to have someone to walk with. I agree with the others -- once you do it a couple of times, all the excuses will probably fly away! I often make myself start exercising even when I don't feel like it. Once I start -- I'm very happy!

Find a motivation that works for you. I have a hard time that meeting a friend to walk with isn't a good motivation. It is always pleasant to have someone to walk with.

However, that said I am not a morning person. My motivation - I put my fat pictures up in my room where when I wake up in the morning I have to look at them. They remind me of the reason I need to get up. It does get easier the more you do it. However, like losing weight, it is something that you have to WANT to do.

Three mornings a week, I leave for a Class, Fitness after 50, two days and a zumba class one day. For me, works best to get out the door and go in the morning. Then I get back, have lunch and plan the rest of my day and meals.

Mornings have always been hard for me. I am such a night owl. My morning motivation to get up and get going is to do a fun hobby. I exercise in the afternoons; sometimes I have energy and sometimes I don't, but it keeps me from just coming home after work and being a couch potato all evening. emoticon

I used to get up at 5 every morning and was in the pool swimming by 5:30. I loved those days! I felt like I could do anything after my workout.

My goal is to get up everyday without hitting the snooze button. :) It seems easy, but I am so used to going back to bed after my alarm for at least 10 more minutes. I just need to convince myself that those 10 minutes aren't really quality sleep anyway so I minds well get up.

I want to motivate in the mornings but am having trouble getting into it. I have been going to bed earlier this week in the hopes of being less sluggish in the mornings. This is the first day that I did not go back to bed after my husband left for work. Baby steps.

For years I had to get up early for my job. So I started morning execise before I took my shower. I now do the same many days. Otherwise I take off for the YMCA classes I go to twice a week, then to the Rec Center for treadmill and bike, two other days.
Today I am starting a Zumba GOLD class at 9, so heading out now. I do think I prefer morn,since I can get back home, shower and do other things, especially when the weather is nice.

I would never have called myself a morning person, but I get up early to exercise by choice. Part of it is because my husband does so also, and he is the early riser -- but if I don't get up and get moving, it means less time for him to have his workout.

One of the main reasons we started getting up early and going to the gym in the morning is because the evenings were getting ridiculous with all the new members joining. In the early morning, it's a very different "crowd" (and less crowded). Now that I have been exercising in the morning for a while, I find that I actually PREFER it. It's such a great start to the day, and I have way more energy for a good workout first thing in the morning compared to later in the evening.

I don't know if it would be the same for you, but maybe if you mentally held yourself responsible for your friend's workout (even though she's understanding), it would be motivation enough to get out there a few times -- and who knows, maybe then you might start to prefer working out in the morning so no extra motivation would be necessary.

In order for exercise to work, it must fit into your lifestyle....and if you are not a morning person, it will never work for you to keep trying to do it. I've never been and will never be a morning exerciser. I do get up for work at 4:30 a.m. every day, but getting up for exercise? No way. I exercise on my lunch break or if can't do it then, I am either outside or on the treadmill after work.

JMB2Lose - That's one reason I exercise outside: I have to get back home! I also employ the "you can quit after 10 minutes if you want" tactic. I've never quit after just ten minutes. The hardest part is getting out the door; once I'm there, I'm good to go.

I am not a morning person either. I do my best sleeping in the mornings. I used to get up at 5 am when I worked and drove school bus. I actually enjoyed most of those days. Felt like I had accomplished something. But now that I'm retired and my grand daughter, whom I take care of a lot sleeps late, I sleep late too. But my day goes soooo fast. Also my back is so sore in the mornings, It's hard for me to be motivated to exercise. Exercise does help with some of the stiffness and pain. One of my goals along with losing weigth this time is to get up earlier and go to bed earlier. Baby steps. Work on a little change at a time. I'm also affected by the seasons and the weather.

I am soooo not a morning person, but I have to get up to take my son to school, so I usually take him to school in my jammies (I just drop him off), then as soon as I get home I jump in the shower and have some breakfast. Then, I allow myself time to really wake up and get motivated. I too am a class person, I don't work out well on my own, but if I make a plan to walk with a fitness buddy or work out on our gym machines with someone, I think to myself that I have to help be their motivation/inspiration. Thankfully, one of my besties is very motivated and is very fit and she has literally come in to my house and drug me out of bed.

Cloudy days are awful, I have depressive disorder dependant on the weather, on those days, I make myself go ahead and take a shower and do some deep cleaning at the very least, I toss my mop aside and scrub my floors on my hands and knees, clean things out, reorganize my garage, etc, something to at least get me moving, then I'm usually up for hitting the gym or walking our indoor track at our gym.

Another thing that helps is the night before I will pick my music if I'm working out alone (which I rarely ever do, I thrive on other people working out next to me/with me), so I usually look forward to listening to the custom playlist I make for that day.

One last thing, if it is nice outside, have your breakfast or morning beverage outside. Take your time and let your senses be flooded with all that early morning sound. Hope this helps...good luck, if nothing else, know you aren't alone, a lot of us here struggle with this too.

My main daily exercise is walking and with heat settling in already I needed to switch to mornings. I need to be at work by 7:15 am (very short commute) and I walk 30 minutes which is about a mile and a half. Get home in time to have a little coffee while playing on the computer before I need to get ready. Thankfully I work a job that jeans and a ponytail is appropriate. I waited for the day where I looked forward to exercise but now I understand that it isn't the act of exercise it is the feeling you get afterwards for the day. I love it!!

Thanks, everyone, for your great advice on waking up early to work out. I've been telling myself for months that I need to get up and exercise, but always talk myself out of it when morning comes.

Now I know what I'm doing wrong! No more talking about it, thinking about it... just do it!

It will get easier. I am not a morning exerciser but I have to work out in the morning twice a week in order to go to the classes I enjoy. I prefer evening because I am more awake and looser but my job hours changed and I can't get to the evening classes anymore.

We have a saying at our house: "if you have to eat a frog today, eat it for breakfast." If exercise is not your favorite thing, do it early and get it over with. In addition to the physical benefits, you will have a sense of accomplishment that will stay with you all day.

Go to bed in your workout clothes. When the alarm goes off, don't think about it, just roll out of bed. If you have a thermos, make yourself some tea or coffee the night before and slurp some down on the way to the bathroom. Brush teeth, add any extra clothes you need, throw on a hat and leave.

The minute I start talking to myself in the morning is the minute I start talking myself out of the workout.

I would love to have an hour to relax before my exercise, but that means that I would have to wake up at 5, just to get in 30 minutes of exercise. So, I am going to try drinking the water before bed, and making myself get up early at least 3 days per week. Maybe once I feel better about those days, I can turn that into 5.

I work out weekend mornings, and I find it nearly impossible to roll right out of bed ready to exercise. The strange thing is I'm definitely a morning person, and I am usually up around 6 or 7, but I still can't get straight out of bed with the intention of exercising right away.

What works for me is planning my morning in a way that I have an hour to sit, drink a cup of coffee, read the news, have a light breakfast, etc, and overall relax before I start my exercise. So if I MUST exercise at 7, then I'm out of bed at 6 to relax and mentally wake up. For me it makes exercise much less of a rude awakening and motivates me much more.

Everyone's different. For some of us, morning is the best time to work out. For others, morning workouts are never going to happen.

I commute by bike, but I must have a car at work. I drive in on Monday my bike and with suits & lunches for the week, and then ride the bike back and forth. I have a couple of co-workeres I can call upon in case of an emergency, but that would be embarassing. I've never missed a ride into work. (And since my round-trip commute burns about a thousand calories, I don't have to schedule "work out" time.)

My husband & I are both trying to ensure we get outside for a walk in the evenings. He's one of those people for whom a morning workout will never work.

I recently decided I will complete an Olympic-distance triathlon in the fall of 2015 (when I turn 50). The ride will my easiest event. To complete the run, I'm have to maintain my commitment to walking/running. (I cannot run a mile right now.) And that's my current motivation to get out and run in the mornings, or to go for a walk at lunchtime.

I live in a climate similar to a high desert - hot in the summer, cold in the winter, dry most of the time, and really windy. I do my best to get outside and play regardless of the weather. (But having the right gear sure helps in that department!)

I too never considered myself a 'morning person'; until lately. My little trick is to have that drink of water before bed, it gets me up everytime at my set time 5am. I did that for the first week maybe? It took me a couple of weeks to get used to getting up and moving around at that time for it to become habit. My motivator is the feel good endorphins you get after, the compliments and sense of accomplishment, that you took the time for yourself. I also have a wonderful workout partner now, she motivates me and we have fun cheering each other on at the gym! I also have to credit caffeine as well. It helps me through the 'pain' and I can really push myself even farther sometimes when I weighttrain. Plus I just love seeing all the smiling faces at the gym! I guess I must've become a gymrat!! Good luck on your morning routines, it's worth it, if you work it!! Hope this helps.

My doctor recommended that I work out first thing in the morning. I have difficulty with my adrenals and so when I was working out in the afternoon or evening, I was revving up my adrenals at a time when they needed to start quieting down and I was having major sleep difficulties.

So I made the decision to start working out in the morning. At night before I go to bed, I prep everything I need for the morning. I put my workout clothes out on the couch along with bra panties, shoes and socks. I fill my water bottles for my work out. I pack my gym bag with all the things that I will need and so in the morning, all I have to do is go out to the living room and get dressed, make my breakfast shake and head out the door.

I've been taking a 6am spinning class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so it helps to have a class to go to. I also go to the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays and do weights, but sometimes it is harder to get to the gym when I don't have a class to go to.

After just a few days of working out first thing in the morning, I felt so amazing, that it my motivation to get up in the morning was knowing how good I would feel after my workout was over. And then I have the rest of the day to do whatever I need to do.

I've been exercising first thing in the morning for 2 1/2 months now and it has now become a habit and is no longer difficult to do. It's just automatic. Creating new habits is not easy, but once they become habit, it is so much easier.

I am not a morning person at all. My whole family can tell you that you do not make eye contact nor talk to me before my shower.. and in all honesty i loathe the noise my shower makes (thats how much i hate getting up early). Yet, since starting working out in the morning i have no issue getting up and going to the gym. I don't think about it, i just do it and then its done. I would go to school for 14 hours but before that i woudl get up and work out for 30 minutes and it gave me more energy for the day.

being 'sick and tired' of feeling 'sick and tired' is my usual motivation.
every day i realize that even if all the pain and discomfort does not disappear - it has to be better than not doing what needs to be done and eating well.. the only result would be feeling even worse. i have been on that end of things too - whether my own doing or external forces taking hold.
i have given up being a perfectionist about everything - the time of day, the duration of exercise, the weighing and measuring all the time, the editing and recalculating - etc.
now i just do what i can - i have to be happy with that . i have learned to pat myself on the back and motivate myself - i am my own cheering section.

Mindfulness can help a lot with things I normally find . . . a royal freaking pain in the rear. Be in the moment. Sense the morning: hear its sounds, smell its smells, feel its feelings. The air is different in the morning. The wilds have been awake and the unwilds are waking. Get to know the time for what it is.

Weather . . . rain gets a raincoat. Fog or ice and I run instead of ride my bike.

I don't think about abstract things about whether I want to or not. I do it anyways.

When I first started getting up early, about 10 years ago, I used to call myself all kinds of names and then bargain with myself for a nice breakfast after my workout.

After about a year, I stopped the should I or shouldn't I argument, it got really old...

Now I just get up and do it. Every single morning at 4 am.

A friend of mine makes a bargain with herself.

If, for any reason, she decides *the night before* that she's not going to get up to exercise the following morning, that's okay. But if she hasn't decided then that she's not, then when the alarm goes off in the morning - no excuses - get your butt out of bed!

I love working out in the morning. You have a big motivator already, the friend waiting for you. Do what you have to make a few workouts. I suspect you won't need near the motivation after you tried it. The increased energy you felt all day the last time you worked out in the morning is quite a motivator.

Not sure if you're a coffee drinker, but a shot of caffeine could help you get up and going. There's lots of reasons not to drink caffeine, but I do anyway so might as well use it to get me to a good workout.

How do you motivate yourself to workout in the early morning? For the past 2 Sundays I committed to meeting with a friend to go for a short walk/jog (I've never been a runner) at around 9am but when my alarm goes off I don't feel like rolling out of bed and have no motivation to do anything (except take my dog out to do his business) but the kicker is that once my alarm goes up, I'm awake for the rest of the day anyway so I could've gone out to meet my friend anyway (luckily she's understanding)!
For the most part I get my workout done in the afternoon or early evening, both inside and out but now that summer is on its way, I want to start waking up earlier to go do my outside workouts while its cool and before the temp rises.

So how do you stay motivated to work out in the morning? Do you prefer to workout in the AM or PM? Do you workout according to the weather outside?
