Mine is at 3 pm. i never eat after 7 pm. i dont know why, just never have. but 3 pm?? so, we are both lucky..we have the problem identified. Brushing your teeth is a GREAT way to prevent it!!! I also keep knitting, and tell myself..if i'm really HUNGRY, not just wanting something in my mouth, i can have it after ___ rows. Generally by the time i finish those rows i'm not wanting it any more...

First of all, you are definitely not alone in this. This is a situation that many people find themselves in. You will need to replace the bad habit with another habit. I keep a list inside my cupboard door of things I can do when I'm bored (as that's when I found myself going to food). I have had that list now for about five years, and it still helps me. There are about 25 different things on there to pick from, and that is what works for me.
I would say that the first thing for you to do is to be aware of what you are doing. So many times, snacking mindlessly can really start to add up, and here is where honesty will really help. Track it all. You don't have to share your tacker with everyone else, but it is amazing what you can learn from this. Also, if you know you will have to track something, that may be enough to stop you from eating it.
At the bottom of the nutrition tracker page, there is a "Notes" section. You can write down here what you were feeling or doing when you started eating mindlessly. We're you tired after a long day? Perhaps you were frustrated because no one else is helping clean up after the family meal. Whatever you are feeling, write it down. This will lead you to the reason you are turning to food, and then you can come up with solutions (like I did with my boredom list - before going thru the tracker exercise, I didn't realize I was eating out of boredom).

In the evening, while cleaning up after a long day, I find myself snacking on peanut butter, bread, jam, whatever. I usually have eaten plenty calories at that point, the reason is certainly not hunger.
I found out it helps to brush my teeth after dinner and tell myself that eating is over. However, most times I forget to do it
