I used to complain all the time when my elementary school-aged kids only got 30 minutes to eat AND play. With the unhealthy food that was being served and the time restraints, we actually *taught* them to choose anything BUT a fruit or vegetable, and we taught them to gobble their food so they'd have time to get some fresh air and blow off some steam. Its no wonder America is obese.
More power to Mrs. Obama!! Even the smallest steps will move us forward on our journey - isn't that what *we're* all trying to re-learn here on SP?
PS - As for taking ketchup off the menu due to too much sugar - she had to do *something* - Pres. Ronald Reagan declared that a little package of ketchup could count as a vegetable in school lunches. I mean, come on...

I agree with those who say kids need PE returned to schools. They also need their recess back. Recess just keeps getting shorter. Schools are trying to make nutritious foods available to all children, not deep frying fries, but baking them. Serving fresh fruit instead of canned fruit in syrup. I've noticed a lot of parents complaining that their kids won't eat it, but all of my observations in schools show me that the kids seem to like the fresher foods.

She is certainly a fine example of what healthy living can do for you.

Michelle Obama was on the Jay Leno show this week talking about her 2 causes, diet & exercise of children, and taking care of the returning troops. She is amazing and also very funny.
SOMEBODY is trying to do SOMETHING about the health of our nation's kids, and that is better than nothing! I think it is great that she is in somewhat more of a position to bring wider changes and she is trying to use it for good.
Why won't kids eat sweet potato fries? Because they weren't educated to enjoy their fruits and veggies. Doesn't it say something about how these kids are living? What about the kids five years from now who have never known anything but fruits and veggies in their school lunches and won't question it? It isn't just today's kids that are suffering, but the kids of the future too.
I wish I had eaten those veggies instead of cardboard pizzas and fries when I was six years old!
I also wish I was as tall and toned as Michelle though. Sigh.

I think it's an awesome cause. I wish her luck. I wish her husband could do more for our broken country.

I think the overhaul in the kids diet across America should be done differently. You cant just start adding fruit and sweet potatoe fries to the lunch menu and say look I made it healthy. The kdis arent eating it.
I know as I have two kids in school. The school cant serve real 2% milk because it has too much fat in it. Instead they have to serve a milk subsitute that is flavored in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. How is that more nutritious? WIC still has milk on their coupons as it is needed for growing bodies.
Also no ranch dressing...to much fat... no ketchup... no much sugar. So how do preteens eat sweet potatoe fries????
I think she's bringing attention to an important subject.
I agree that PE in schools is getting short shrift. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. I can't help but think that letting kids have plenty of exercise during the school day would help them settle down and concentrate on the schoolwork.
