I know 3 people who use the jackets and they work wonderfully but for thunder, fireworks and gun shots. Not sure they are for general anxiety. We have 3 Jack Russell's and the only way to keep them calm is lots of exercise. We try not to use meds but I know there are some out there to help with anxiety, but go to your vet or even better, holistic vet for a solution. I would not give my pets any crap from a big box retail pet store!

I have seen those and wondered if they work.

Just me, butting into your conversation guys...

Have you seen those jackets/wraps for dogs with anxiety??
Here's a website that may prove useful before you turn to medications for that distressed dog:

Thanks for the replies. I've been doing some research, and yes, animals are prescribed meds like benzos, just like humans. I think I'll give my vet a call this week and talk to him. Thanks again.

I was kind of hoping someone would have an answer here about which drug to use, but I think DLP is right, probably better to talk to your vet. I'll do the same for my dogs

Hey, Dan. I think a lot of the supplements in pet stores are like human supplements. No clear evidence that they work. Also a lot of that stuff is made overseas and the FDA does not regulate supplements. who knows what you are really buying

i do know that vets prescribe human drugs for animals. I've heard of dog's being given prozac among other meds.

The best thing to do is talk to your vet.

We are going to Disney World in about 4 weeks and our 2 year old Mini Aussie will be staying with my parents. She's a good dog, but gets extremely anxious around new settings and she has pretty severe separation anxiety. I've been taking her out there to get her used to their house but she still acts nervous.

I've been looking at some anti-anxiety meds at Petsmart and Petco, but I don't know how effective they are. Would I be better off giving her vet a call and seeing what he recommends? I think she would be okay after the first day, I just want something to calm her down for her first night without us (she hasn't been away from us for longer than 24 hours since we got her).
