I did research on what is actually in McDonald's food...then I questioned whether or not I really wanted to ingest that grossness into my body. Once you eat fresh food, you will also start to taste how dirty the grease of the deep fryers is - it coats your mouth, and leaves a nasty taste behind. As previously mentioned, also do an analysis - do you really want to use up the majority of your daily caloric/nutritional allotment, on one measly burger? For me, I LOVE to eat...one quarter pounder would never be sufficient to appease me for the bulk of the day. You will also find, that after a awhile of staying away from deep fried, greasy fast food, your digestive system will retaliate when you reintroduce it back into your diet. If you really find yourself drawn to McDonald's, they do have some healthier options. If I am in absolute crunch, I will get a snack wrap - but that's a rarity. These are the motivators I use to stay away from the fast food nightmare :)

Keep water with you when you're driving too... some good advice from others too.
Part of that willpower you have in committing to exercise and eat well needs to come up and win the fight in your mind.

Study their nutrition menu. Really read the value of these items, the calorie count, the sodium. When you start craving it, look at how many calories that big mac is really worth, and decide if that's how you want to spend your budget.
Can you have McDonald's? yes. You can. If you can work it into your calorie range, why not? But if you do, what will you be giving up? A quarter pounder with cheese and a fry is 750 calories, and over 1200 mg of sodium.
Do you really want to spend half your daily allowance on that?
Why not skip it, and make your own burgers and fries at home? And then, you'll have a meal that contains fewer preservatives than your average nuclear bomb.

It has been relatively easy for me to give up fast food except for breakfast. However I might have that licked. I made a bunch of english muffin, sausage egg sandwiches & frozen them. I take them out the nigth before and 30 seconds in the microwave and they are really good.
The rest of the time, I try to eat a piece of fruit before I leave work so I'm not starving. Then, when I drive by the fast food exit I actually cheer for myself. outload. really.

Change your patterns. If you regularly drive by McD's, change your route so you don't see them.
Make sure you are getting enough sleep. I find that I make poorer choices when I'm sleep-deprived. That may help you to make better choices as well.
Reward yourself when you do make a good choice.
And be nice to your inner self. Don't beat yourself up. Just strive to do better next time.

One choice at a time...one day at a time. Start putting the money you would have spent on fast food in a jar and save it. After a few weeks, use the money to treat yourself to something good for you. A new set of hand weights, a fun DVD, a massage. One choice at a time!
