Thanks, Russell, you've really helped me. Sometimes I feel like I need a sponsor like someone in AAexcept I guess it would be SA, as in 's' for sugar. Food has always been my Achilles heel and my crutch to make myself feel better when nothing else would. And its hard whenever you start a new lifestyle and no one around you, especially during the holidays wants to support the 'new you'. I think when I start to exercise (which to be honest--I've never really consistently exercised my whole life) I'll just try walking the dogs and build from there.

I wouldn't know. I have congestive heart failure, and I started at 361, so at first I just walked to the mailbox for exercise. Then I started wading in the pool. After 6 months I took a 10 minute walk, and then it just kept increasing, as the weight decreased.

I always though I wanted to be a runner. I loved running as a kid, but just have no desire so far to do it, now that I could. I ride a bike in the summer, or play frisbee, swim, but mostly just walk 90 minutes a day. Wait till you get down to a point where you won't do any damage to your knee. Till then , just eat low carb, and watch the weight drop. Probably by spring thaw, you will feel like some exercise. Make it a sport, something fun, even croquet, or just wade in the pool, and splash around. Don't waste time on a treadmill, or elliptical, unless you actually like that. If exercise is fun, you will do it.

I now do a pickup game of basketball with some high school friends 2 X a week. About 2/3 of us play on the same days of the week, and since we are all around 40, we just skip it if we don't feel good. Many high schools have volleyball leagues of parents, and seniors, so you can be social, and get some exercise. That helps it seem easier. I am indoors on the treadmill more as winter approaches, and find it bearable if I can find someone to talk to.

Take it easy, focus on diet, and let exercise come naturally. I remember thinking it was amazing when I walked 1/2 an hour at 3

As far as impeding weight loss, you may build muscle at the start. The only reason this might be a problem, is if it makes your weight loss slow enough that you think the diet doesn't work.

Just get through Induction, and stick to it for 2 weeks, and hopefully by then you know it works. Stick to just the diet for 2-4 weeks. If you start worrying about exercise schedules, you may lose focus on the diet. Plenty of time to increase exercise later.

Hey you two, Michelle/Russell, I know this may sound lazy, and perhaps I am, but since I put on a lot of weight I've had a few injuries, broke a toe and hurt a knee, I've been a little slow to start exercising again, a little slow , meaning I haven't started yet. I've heard though that when you first start Atkins you should go slow because it'll impede weight loss, any truths to that?

So...this is my diet for the past few days. Since my appetite has plummeted there were a couple days I just had dinner. And that was it. I heard this was no good. And someone compared me to a Sumo wrestler and I'd never lose weight that way, and perhaps they were right, but my mindset, was I wasn't hungry. I simply wasn't until dinner, and that it'd kick start my diet. However, I haven't noticed much weight coming off so that was the anti-christ of this week. This was yesterday. Dinner

Chicken Thigh, 2 unit with skin from kfc-grilled
Butter, salted, 1 tbsp
Pecans, 5 grams
Chicken Leg, 1 grilled kfc
Almonds, 1 almond
Green Giant Cut Green Beans, can, 1 cup

So, you two, have helped me the most through this diet, b/c wow, there are so many Atkin haters out there its hard to ask questions on these blogs without at least a handful of haters complaining how its a horrible diet. Which right now, b/c I've just started this again, after gaining forty pounds, I need as many positive people helping guidance now more than ever.

Do you want to post an average day's menu? I think you're on the right path with the right mindset; we all have to be healthy for ourselves.

I used the ketostix, and even at less than 10 grams a day I could never get them darker than lilac. I lost 25 lbs though in my first 3 weeks. The scale is a better gauge than the sticks, and you should be able to tell when you are in ketosis.

Try upping the fat, and see if it causes weight loss to speed up. It also puts you farther into ketosis. If you do lower fat Atkins, it makes ketosis harder, since ketones are from the breakdown of fat cells, and the body will break them down faster, if it doesn't perceive a shortage of available fat.

They say it takes 3 weeks to make something a habit, so be diligent for 2 more weeks. By now, the cravings should be minimal, and your energy should have skyrocketed. Feeling good always helps us stick to it.

Yeah this time around has been a real struggle as far as learning what to eat to not 'set' me off to binge and cheat and then the problems going to the bathroom. But I made it through my cheater stage at day 6 and feeling much better. The weight has been slower this time, even though I'm Very strict at following this diet to a T. And I guess I was getting a little discouraged finally -day 4 or 5 getting into ketosis and not seeing much weight loss.

Russell, This is day #6 for me. And a few days ago, I noticed the strip turning pink. And that is the case with me--if I have one cheat, I mean like a single M&M I'll back outta ketosis. This is the 3 time I tried this diet the first time weight flew off, but this time, not so much. I never remembered having problems going to the bathroom either. Sucks, but I'm sticking with it. NO other diet has controlled my outta control binge eating.

This varies by individual and is dependent on what the person is consuming and how much they are moving. Some people lose better with high fat, some with low fat, some with extra veggies, some with only certain veggies, etc. My opinion/perception is that Atkins is a well structured, very effective plan that most people tend to benefit from if they remain within the guidelines, regardless of slight personal variation.

For me, about 24 hours. Some people take 3-4 days though, so a cheat sets them back quite a bit. However, you should start losing water weight very quickly. Stay hydrated.

I lost 3 lbs on Day 1. How long have you been doing Atkins?

How long does it take for you body to be in ketosis (atkins) and for it to start losing weight?
