I get off the bus or train at least a stop early! A little fresh air helps as much as the energy from the extra steps!

8/28/13 12:34 A

This may sound really silly, but I stand on one leg while I brush my teeth! I love to ice skate in the winter, but it's tough to keep the ankles strong enough through the year. Standing on one leg really works the ankle muscles. Try it!

I try to avoid the drive thru lane and walk into the store to get my drink/food-especially when I noticed that the four people in the cars waiting in the drive thru lane were all noticeably overweight.

I enjoy parking at the very back of the parking lot whenever we go shopping. The extra steps really add up.

I read in a SP article that cooking your own meals burns a significant amount of calories on average--probably depends on how involved the recipe is, and you have to make sure you're cooking healthfully, but it's certainly more activity than putting something in the microwave!

My job is mostly sitting, so at lunchtime, instead of sitting while I eat, I pack a lunch in a bag with a long strap so I can take a walk WHILE I eat.

8/25/13 9:58 P

Wall pushups and some Yoga poses/stretches in the shower. Try hard not to sit down any sooner than necessary when I get to the office in am. I put the coffee on (I don't drink it) make myself some green tea, water plants inside and out side, walk to and from my office to my husband's as much as possible. He uses the intercom all the time, I get up and walk to his office. Try to walk to the post office as often as I can.

Step up and down if there is a raised curb while you pump your gas, otherwise just march in place.

I have two choices when I sit in my living room or at my laptop: the couch (high, deep, soft and comfy, and hard to get out of! lol) or one of the upholstered benches (firm, backless, lower to the ground)...
Until after dinner, I don't sit on the couch anymore. If I do, it's kind of like my subconscious tells me I don't have to do any more--so I don't do it! LOL

It's gotten a lot easier since... and my physical therapist tells me my posture has really improved! emoticon LOL

My pedometer is the best motivator I ever found. I get 12,000 steps a day and I have to build that throughout my normal day. I do things like go up and down every aisle of the grocery store (1,000 steps easy), give the dog an extra walk or two (1000-2000 steps), park the car and walk to pick up my 6th grader instead of going thru car line (500 steps), making a separate trip to each room when putting away laundry (350+ steps). Little stuff like that really adds up!

I do squats in the shower while waiting for the conditioner to sink in, then shimmy while I rinse it out and also while brushing my teeth. I also walk to the post office and bank if I have to go while I'm working (it's easier than finding parking spots too).

I just started a few "challenges" for myself to get it more exercise during the day. I do a "stairs" challenge, which means three times per day I walk up & down 177 stairs. I spread this out throughout my work day, to get my heart bumping.

I also made a DIY weight -- using a laundry detergent bottle filled with water. I started do arm strength training every other day. I want to get a resistance band, though. It is more portable, and there are more things you can do with it.

Some discount the day to day things we do like gardening mowing the lawn and other activities. All these are exercise. I have a fitbit and it has helped me see the "non-exercise" activities are burning calories. Laundry, house cleaning, etc

great suggestions! When I bring in the groceries, I carry only 2 bags at a time, and try to run up and down my front steps - I could carry more bags but I know I'm doing the Stairmaster :)

I sit at my laptop nearly all day...I am attempting to write some children's books...and my Dr. suggested setting a kitchen timer so that I get up and walk for at least 10 minutes every hour. She is worried about my developing blood clots. So that is what I've been doing...most times I am up and moving before the timer goes off. emoticon

Music on the treadmill really gets me moving. When a fast song comes up I speed up and my arms and legs are moving to the rythym. I know I must look crazy, but I get my sweat on!

1. parking at the end of the lot and walking farther to the store/bank/etc
2. bagging all groceries - carting them to the car - unload into trunk - walk cart back to parking caddy
3. making several extra trips up and down stairs in my house -
4. get up and down from chair or couch regularly to just stretch, move legs and straighten out my back
5. taking stairs more often than an elevator (if if make sense - i won't do it if i am going up 15 floors but i might walk up two flights before getting on the ele)

At home: Running after my little girl, making sure she does not injure herself as she is constantly climbing on/getting into something. Picking up things, tidying.

At work: I have a balancing chair. That way my core is engaged while I sit in front of the computer. I also walk and take the stairs when possible.

I will shop groceries on my walk home from work 2-3 times a week. (This means walking close to 3K carrying 3-7 kilos and then finishing it with hauling it all up the stairs to the fourth floor. I am usually ready for a shower by then..)

8/17/13 1:45 P

chase my kids a lot. do calf pumps while watching tv, kettlebells randomly throughout the day. mow the yard before the grass actually gets high sometimes.

When I'm folding laundry or cleaning I take each item (ok, maybe not underwear) and put it away individually instead of making a pile and making one trip. If I put music on, I may dance a little while I'm doing it! emoticon

I've not yet started these (too new to this all) but some great advice from BBC was:

Take your phone calls (if you are in a private office or cube) standing up, and when possible, walk around your cube.

If you can (policy, quality of cell, and/or need of computer), push your calls to your cell and walk around the office.

Take a long path to the bathroom.

Walk with your friends to buy lunch and if time permits, go a bit father.

if you have kids, get used to going OUT with them, to parks, out to your lawn, and play with them.

I park my car and walk round town, time, energy and weather permitting. Usually clock up 10-12000 steps those days. If I'm doing heavy shopping, I park my car near that shop and walk to the others.
I also try to work in t5 sets of 20 jumping jack squats and, at the moment, of 5 pushups during the day. Normally start off with one set after my warmup and before cardio, another after cardio and before strength, and possibly a third set after strength. Forgot about the last 2 sets till writing this. Have done them now, later than I do from choice...

I do squats while brushing my teeth, and I also park in the emptiest part of the parking lot. I saved up for YEARS to buy my truck and don't want some moron backing into it. I guess that is my main motivation for parking far away, but it is a habit and I am pleased to get in the walk.

I bike commute, take the stairs, I take a long walk at lunch, when I’m watching TV I play catch with a stress ball, I “Chair Dance” at work, I dance while brushing my teeth, I get up and move around every hour or so.

I'm also signing up for more physical events, like 5k run/walks, fitness challenges, etc. When the weather isn't so dangerously hot, I do an after work hike up Tumamoc Hill, it's 730 feet nearly straight up. (The "hill" alone could be a workout routine all it's own).

I'm on my feet all day at work which is great; I'm constantly running around checking on customers and going to get product from the floor.

Also since I moved to Florida, I have gotten used to parking farther away from the store entrances (mostly because the people who drive here scare me and I want to park away from them lol)

Parking further away from the store and even the entrance to the gym, even if it's just a couple of parking spots further. Every bit counts!

It amazes me how people fight for the parking spot closest to the GYM DOOR! You're there to exercise, why not start from when you get out the car?!
