My husband and son both get raging headaches from any artificial sweetners, so that speaks to me. If a food can cause me or someone I love physical pain, it's out.

I don't have a problem with people liking aspartame... but the taste is just awful.

This is the only thing I can possibly add to this conversation on aspartame. When my daughter was born it was a long and difficult delivery and soon after she began to have seizures ( they think it was caused by the difficult delivery). She stayed in the hospital for two weeks on medication and monitored until they felt the seizures were no longer a threat. We were referred to a top pediatric neurologist who was from Vienna and he told us that even though the seizures had stopped and not likely to occur again to keep my daughter away from aspartame. He said it was a neurotoxin and was linked to seizures in children. That was over 20 years ago and Europe was even starting to ban aspartame back then. Personally, I have never used artificial sweeteners and stay away from most additives and chemicals in foods and household products.

Plain and simple it is POISON, ANYTHING ARTIFICIAL IS BAD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd much rather eat my sugars from fruits and vegetables, honey and maple syrup.
But even regular table sugar is better than anything made by chemists in a laboratory IMO.

I refuse to allow a lab created artificial sweetener or high fructose corn syrup (sulfuric acid is used for processing) into my body.

Personally, I avoid all fake sugars because they are made of chemicals. I have even been told that real sugar is fine, even for diabetics, if used in moderation. I think that if everyone worked to get their bodies used to low amounts of sugar again, many people would be much healthier. We have left the healthy way of eating for convience and over processed-chemical filled food. Our bodies do not need a massive amount of sugar. In fact if we completely elimated extra sugar from our diets, we would be just fine. Sugar naturally occurs in most food we eat. Something to think about!

Well...not really in my book, but that's just me?
I prefer it when someone just says "let's talk about XX" - rather than trying to scare people...especially now that there is a huge ground beef recall due to e coli - which this has absolutely nothing to do with. I find that irresponsible, at best.
And I get it...it's quite the attention grabbing headline (shock value). But what is it really?
While bacteria may not produce "feces" in the general term, they do produce "wastes." "Anaerobic bacteria (either obligate or facultative) produce ATP without the assistance of Krebs Cycle or the oxidative electron transport system. Many will therefore get all their ATP from fermentation, meaning they produce lots of acidic waste products. We can therefore differentiate between aerobes and facultative bacteria based on detecting these acidic waste products." (bacterial physiology) Laymen usually associate wastes with "poop" or "feces."
If a carpenter does a job and ends up with a pile of unusable pieces of wood, that pile is called "waste". Do you think a layman would consider a pile of scrap wood to be feces or poop?
Aspartame is made from amino acids made by bacteria.

Since the goal is to make the amino acids, they are not "waste" at all.
E. coli is also used to make other protein products, including insulin.
Do you eat yogurt? You know, the ones that have "live cultures" in them to aid digestion? Sour cream, made by fermenting cream with certain bacteria? Sauerkraut, also produced by bacterial fermentation? Buttermilk?
To say that aspartame is made from e. coli "feces" is a deliberate attempt to create an adverse image that is unjustified."
So - at the end of the day, is using it right, or wrong? For me, wrong - but I just think this kind of "shock value headline screaming" really does not do much.
