I think your body needs rest and if you don't give it rest you could end up seriously injuring yourself. However, I don't think this should be a free pass to sit on your bum and do nothing. Even doing housework is burning calories. Just take a break from your exercise routine.

Maybe I am wrong...but my interpretation of her post was she already takes days off and wanted to take another day off which would be 3 days in a row due to muscle soarness. My reply was based on not breaking routine but modifying it so that is doable. I don't suggest someone not taking days off...I highly recommend it.

In my experience, taking at least a day off is fundamentally important, even if one has not been so sore. It allows you to go back to exercise with much more enthusiasm than when you don't take any rest days and thus exercise on autopilot. Anything done too much increases the likelihood of burnout, which can happen to even people who love exercise. It should also be an opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition and exercise in reducing fat and achieving fitness.

6/16/12 6:16 A didn't take the day walked a mile, which is a modified version of you normal routine. Good for you, you made a compromise which is important to recognize. You didn't sit on the couch and you stayed moving just at a lower pace. The way I see you listened to your body but didn't give into it completely.

Taking a few days off a week (like 3) is good for your body. Your body needs time to let itself rebuild the muscle and recover and you can actually do more harm than good from what I have heard if you DON'T take a couple days off a week. I have heard it is best to stagger your days off but it is best to take a couple days during your week to recover.

I did take the day off but i made sure not to lay around doing nothing. I ended up walking a mile to get a volleyball net set for the kids and we played that for a bit together this evening. Also got house work that needed down out of the way.

I think my legs needed the break. I know Mondays are hard to get moving but i already have my mind set to get it done,

the question you have to ask yourself honestly is are you really sore to the point that you are unable to move without pain or are you making excuses? I say this because this is what I have to ask myself when I just don't feel like it. Case in point, I have a chest cold...I have not been sick in years (seriously) so I feel like I am dying. :) Yesterday I went to the gym I did my 45 minutes of cardio but I did not work hard at it nor did I do my ST. Today when I woke up I am still congested and I am tired. I was thinking I would skip the gym...I had a great excuse. I went and I did my 45 minutes of cardio and I worked hard...but I still didn't do my ST. I know for me that if I break my routine, I will continue to break my routine and it will be harder and harder to get back...I take the weekends off from the gym...and Mondays are a bitch to get back. I have a chest cold not the flu. Big difference...but the best thing for a cold is to keep moving...same thing with soar muscles, movement will make them feel better. If they are torn...that's anther story. I would continue with my routine but at a modified pace.

I usually work out an hour a day, mixture of cardio and strength training, 4 days a week and the fifth day I usually do an hour of moderate paced walking. Then I take the weekend off, I mean, I may be active, but just don't log it or feel like I have to do it. If you are sore, you def. need a rest day to recover. You don't want to injure yourself.

You are absolutely right in listening to your instincts. One day off won't derail you! You need to listen to your body. While active rest (something like a light walk) is good for you, sometimes, we really do need to sit down and take a breather.

Your body gets stronger on the days you rest. That's when your muscles heal. Your body's telling you to slow down. Jogging, especially, is very hard on your joints. You need to listen, or you'll run yourself right into a repetitive stress injury.

Yoga is indeed a great option for days off... heck, I would suggest incorporating it into your day after your runs and walks... the stretching will help ease pain later, and keep you limber for the actual cardio!

I took a day off from the gym yesterday to mow the yard and get some long over do work done around the house. Following diet and sweating like mad in the sun, still dropped weight. The trick is to stay active even when not working out.

If you treat it as a recovery day, then it is part of a running plan, not a day off. I did a half with my Grandson May 27. The next week was a recovery week, less running than normal giving my body a chance to rebuild from the effort. Take time to allow the body to recover is part of a good plan. If taking time off or time to do something else to allow the body to recover, then it is not time off and therefore is less likely to lead to going off track, as the time off is actually on track.

You don't really have to take a 'day off' if you don't want to. I think the key is to have a rest day to let your body recover. I do light Yoga or a light walk on my day off.

I have been walking 5 days a week 3 miles each time and have now starting jogging some 3 times a week. Started that on Wednesday. My legs are really sore and i am thinking on a day off from walking. Being Friday it will been 3 days off. I feel bad but i heard that we should let our bodies heal and not push to the point of this kind of pain.

I am also afraid that if i take a day off that i will fall off track completely. I am thinking as i write this that is it Friday and i get the weekend off from exercise. So i might just do it but later today or i will feel like a fail.
