You can also help wean yourself off coke by swapping one or more per day to a seltzer or tonic water. You still get the bubbly fizz, but without so much of the other junk and sugar. Then it might not feel so drastic of a change from that to water or tea or other healthier options.

I can relate to what you wrote. While pregnant, I was not allowed to have any caffeine and once I gave birth, I went over board trying to "make up" for all of the "missed" cokes. This past Labor Day weekend, I went on girls' weekend w/ my mom and daughter and was mortified when I saw a full body picture of myself. I also realized that I was drinking 2-4 cokes a day, along w/ the occasional glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage and zero water. At that point, I made the choice to go cold turkey on the cokes. The first week was horrible, but once I made it through that week everything was fine. I went the second Sun in Sept to Christmas day w/ out drinking any cokes. On Christmas day I decided that to have one coke would not harm anything and it was so strong that I couldn't even finish it and later my stomach revolted. Needless to say I am over the coke cravings. It's not easy to give up, but I can promise you that once you walk away, you will feel so much better.

Another great response, RUSSELL! Listen to him - he's been there and has made really inspirational changes in his life.

I want to underscore that sugar (of ANY sort, HFCS or honey or agave, you name it) is an addictive substance. It may also be caffeine.. or aspartame.. or any other unnatural thing your body has become accustomed to. Saying you can "wean" yourself off slowly is like telling an alcoholic that he can have his liquor "in moderation" while he weans himself off. Just ain't happenin'. You'll end up torturing yourself and, very likely, fail in the attempt. It may be harder to just go cold, as RUSSELL stated... but you'll be free of it sooner and with better success. Try. We're pulling for you!

OTOH - having to drink/eat in combination may also be indicative of some GI problem. You should see a GI specialist, or at least strongly query your PCP about this.
I had a string of symptoms (one of which being that I couldn't eat without "chasing" it with liquids) which turned out to be GERD with associated esophageal erosion, reflux, an esophageal stricture and hiatal hernia, gastroparesis and intestinal stasis... all related to an autoimmune problem. Exacerbated by a miserable case of leaky gut, which is slowly resolving due to the meds and dietary changes prescribed to me by our endocrinologist and my GI specialist.
Before you simply assume it's *ALL* emotional or habitual, have your healthcare team check it out.

Since changing my diet, I've found that things I thought were terribly watered-down and tasteless now seem as sweet to me as sugary soda used to. I drink a lot of water, but I also like PowerAde Zero, which used to be so bland... now it's very sweet-tasting to me. Once you start to make changes, your tastes change! thankfully. The transition is difficult, I agree. But it's worth it. Try. You know what you're doing isn't good for you or for your goals!

I had this problem with Pepsi. I drank about 6 liters a day, even after being diagnosed with diabetes. I was also eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's daily, and 2-3 snacks every night. So when I tried to wean myself off of pop, I would have some ice cream or sweets, and then I would want pop. Anything that spiked my blood sugar caused this.

So I went on Atkins 4.5 years ago, and not only cut out pop, but have also been off meds for diabetes for 3.5 of those years, and lost 170 lbs, all while not having any cravings ( unless I cheat ).

When you eat foods that spike the blood sugar, Insulin is released to drop it back down. If the glucose created is large, then the Insulin release to remove it from the bloodstream is also large. This causes the blood sugar to drop quickly, and you feel tired, and run down. Over time, you have turned to high glycemic foods ( sugar being highest ), and it bumps the glucose levels back up, and makes you feel better. So pop is causing the lower blood sugars, and lethargic feelings, but also raises them, and you feel better temporarily.

People who have this happening usually eat high carb, and will feel cravings even 2 hours after a meal. The Insulin did it's job, and removed the glucose from the bloodstream, storing some as glycogen, but most as bodyfat. So pop is causing you to build up bodyfat also, as you drink, feel tired, get hungry/thirsty, and drink more calories, or eat more food.

You feel crabby, tired, and maybe your joints ache, and are constantly hungry. Pop only gives you energy temporarily.

You need some food that digests slower, allowing some food to be used now (carbs ), and others to be used in 2,4,or 6 hours, as they get digested ( fat/protein ).

I quit pop cold turkey, and in about 3-4 weeks, all cravings were gone. I follow low carb/Atkins, because what I craved was the sugar in the Pepsi. So eating sugary foods still causes me to want a pop. Now I get most of my carbs from vegetables.

If you think you are addicted to pop/sugar, then the idea of moderation is silly. It is one thing if the food you eat is not that healthy, so you choose to limit it. Then moderation is a good thing. However, if one serving causes you to drink/eat more, then moderation is just lying to yourself. You know that one serving, will lead to many more, so moderation is impossible.

The term moderation implies that you have control of when you can stop. If you stop when the 2-liter is empty, then you do not have control.

Read up on low glycemic, and low carb diets, and see if eating low glycemic carbs is enough, cutting out sugar, and processed foods, as well as maybe bread, and pasta. If that doesn't work, then you might want to try low carb. You may find that you can eat quite a bit of carbs, as long as you eat healthier forms of them. This keeps blood sugars stable, allows you to eat the right amount, and lose weight steadily, with no hunger/cravings.

I open one can of coke zero each day and most days I don't even finish it. I don't smoke or drink so I feel like I can allow this one treat. 2 liters per day is extreme. I hope you can at least cut down your intake if you can't stop completely. Good luck.

i agree about getting help for this as a psychological problem. because it sounds like you have trained yourself that this is how you drink coke. so the best thing for you to do is untrain yourself.
unless you're eating very dry foods or have a medical condition the digestive tract is more than capable of taking care of whatever you eat without immediately needing fluid to "wash the food down." that may also include the assumption that you're properly hydrating the rest of the day.
i'm not trying to be rude or mean or anything, and i can see what logical place this started from, but the idea that you need to wash food down with soda seems like it is an extreme that you have just conditioned yourself to. sort of like if you decided that you were only going to eat when you had a linen napkin. so you'd buy a bunch of linen napkins, make sure that you always had some laundered and with you and after a while you'd be at a loss for what to do if you found yourself at a meal without one. the linen napkin [or the soda] only has a direct link to the food in your mind. it's a habit that you have built up. so you need to ease yourself out of the habit or work on creating a new one.

I agree that slowly weaning yourself off of soda is the best way to go. Here are a few articles/blogs you might find helpful:

Start with some small goals, like replacing one soda with one water each day. Then you can slowly build up from there.

I think you should talk to your Dr about this. To me it is a kind of addiction, but one where there is a psychological component to it. There are some forms of therapy which can help considerably. One is CBT. That encourages you to challenge your thought processes and is really quite productive (speaking from experience.)

Sounds like an addiction to something, probably either caffeine or sugar, or even both. Wean yourself off of it slowly, and if you find yourself still wanting the caffeine, maybe substitute iced tea flavored with fruit or natural sweetener like stevia. I just gave up soda at the new year and it's been difficult the past couple of days but it's getting easier!

Hi. I just started my weight lost process, I am 25 and I weigh 158 pounds. My goal is to lose 30 pounds. My problem is I love drinking coca-cola and in order for me to drink it I tend to eat so that way I can wash the food down with soda. My questions are does anybody else have this problem? And how can I stop it? (I can drink a 2 liter in a day)
