There is always someone here to lend and ear - give support, answer questions, offer feedback!!!

I go to the diet/nutrition forum - people post questions about things I might be struggling with - or even things I never thought of! You can read what others have done to help, or what solutions they found,, etc. Sometimes just reading what others post makes you reflect on your own diet, and changes that you can make.

One question was about crunchy snacks - and someone said they like roasted chickpeas - I was like "OMG I never even heard of that!!", so now I have a new snack to try ;)

Thank you all so much for your replies, Yesterday was a good day and I'm sure that your messages helped me!

I got on the scales this morning....I have only put on a few pounds, so that was a pleasant surprise :)

You are all an inspiration and when I'm not feeling great I will re-read your messages to help me.

Perhaps with all of my attempts in the past I have been missing the moral support that I though I didn't need.

Hi Liz - Unfortunately, life happens, so there will always be something that comes along to derail us. The trick is to get back up and get going again. However, having said that, and without knowing how many carbs you were actually consuming, it MAY have been that you had gone TOO low in carbs to be able to continue this path.

What I suggest you do now is to start again, WITH BABY STEPS. Just change one or two things, like maybe an extra piece of fruit/vege, and reduce soda/juice but increase water, AND mobilize a bit more in your day. Only when your mind/body has gotten used to this change, add something else to the mix. Odds are that by practicing this technique, you will soon find yourself going in the right direction and it won't have been hard to achieve :-)

I note that your inspiration to lose a lot of weight is a holiday in the States. That is great, but rather than your goal being that amount, why not remove all 'numbers' as the goal, and instead make it "I want to lose weight and be healthier!"

I can assure you that even if you lose a quarter of the weight you want, you will still look really great! Also, the closer to your goal, the slower it generally becomes. I am sure that ultimately you want this to be about the rest of your life, rather than 9 months time?????

When I started this journey, my Dietitian wanted to me lose 'x' amount of weight. I thought she was C-R-A-Z-Y, and decided MY goal was that I was just going to lose, and if I could get under 90kg, that would be great - if I managed to get under 80kg that would be even better. It took 16 months to lose just on 23kg (50lb). I happily sat there for a year enjoying the new me, AND my new clothes, before deciding I could go down further. I ended up hitting the 70kg. I weighed all of my food and entered it all into the Nutrition Tracker to give me the power to stay on course. I have been at my goal for 3 years and STILL weigh all of my food and enter it all into the tracker to ensure that I STAY there.

Years ago, I also did low carb and it really seemed to speak to my sensibilities (at first). I, too, had results like you described.
The problem for me was, I just couldn't sustain it and wanted to kill someone for their sandwich...or pasta...or a banana!
I was like you in that "all or nothing" mentality, and diets that forbids large groupings of food just caters to people like us: you're either in or your out. I was "off sugar" or "on." Black & white - you get the picture.
Let me tell you, I regained the weight back in lightening speed.

The problem is life isn't black or white. I did not teach myself to eat healthier as a lifestyle. Until now.

The cool thing: I still do gravitate towards a lower carb way of eating, and so I go with that but I decided this 3rd time that I was *done* doing the wacky, unsustainable diets.
Every body is different, but maybe you could try staying at a lower carb range (and as mentioned, make them good carbs - not all carbs are evil!).
I focus on eating healthfully & staying in a calorie range & that's it. No drama if I want a fruit that has more fructose than previously permissible. I can cook & eat a yam (like a sweet potato), which has starch but is packed w/ nutrients.

And I don't go nuts about it. I eat 7-9 servings of fruits & veggies a day w/o fail. If I want a starchier veggie or fruit one day, no big deal. It all has worked out in the end and I am not driving myself crazy trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Not knocking low carb at all here. But if you feel it's too strict for you and/or is making you crazed, maybe try this more relaxed approach and see how you do. I was surprised at how well it worked for me.

Oh, and the scale? I lost six sizes w/o setting foot on one except at the beginning to get my Spark range (that was enough drama). No scale = a lot less drama. Unless you're trying to make a weight class as a lady wrestler, what do you care? You know how your clothes, shoes, rings, etc. are fitting. That can be your guide.

Good luck to you! You have a reasonable amount of time and I know you can do this.

Lastly, we're all different so what works for one may not work as well for another. When you find what is working for you, it will be loads easier and that, my friend, is what they mean by lifestyle.

It's hard to get out of that all-or-nothing mentality. I'm a carb craver and have issues with prediabetes in the past. Once I start eating simple white carbs like breads and pastas, I just crave more. It's not a matter of willpower, but biology. Insulin surges to deal with the carbs, flooding the system. Insulin keeps looking for more and then you crave more. It's like a roller coaster.

Things that have helped me. Always eat a healthy fat or protein with a carb. Avoid simple carbs and go for complex ones like brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, etc. I need carbs to fuel my active lifestyle but vary consumption based on the day's activities. If I do opt to indulge, it is planned, preferably away from home and portion controlled. Stop telling yourself that you can never have a particular food again. And if you slip, just keep going. It does get easier. I eat everything I want -- just not every day or in huge quantities.

So, you have 9 months to lose 50 know what, your goal weight and time is so realistic.

You are aiming for a 6 pound a month loss - and that is so smart of you. I did the same thing....and it's really paid off, my goal is Sept. 18th.

Slow and steady, slow and steady, slow and steady. You just need to get the steady down :)

Yep, i will get on those scales tomorrow morning. My smaller clothes are still feeling loose enough so I might be lucky.

I'm not going to be at my start weight, so you're right, I don't have as far to go as I did and it is all about changing my mentality more than anything. My all or nothing mentality has got me where I am now and so that has to be the first thing to change.

You have summed me up in a nutshell! I am an all or nothing eater. Somebody once told me "you wouldn't throw away a vase of flowers if one was bad would you"...I would :)

I think I just want it to be quick, we have a big holiday in the States in December and I just want to be free to enjoy it without hiding from photos etc.

OK - this may go against convention, but....get on the scale. You need to see exactly where you are, in black and white. Anytime I have gone over, and thought "oh man, I don't want to see this", is exactly when I have gotten on. I got on, saw the number and BAM! That was the motivation that I needed to start again.

Don't get distraught - there is no need to. You went off the rails (sh*t happens). Are you going to stay there, or pick yourself back up - that is what is important. Are you going to treat this as a learning experience? Or wallow in it? How you choose to deal with this is what is important.

You don't want to be the type of person who says "oh well, I blew it now, I might as well give up"

You want to be the type of person who ways "yeah, I messed up - but baby I'm back and stronger than ever!!"

Did you binge on food that was in your house? I don't have "junk food" in my house - not there....can't eat it.

Start tracking your food today. Start drinking your water again today.

Hi, Liz !!

You can't beat yourself up because you've regained the weight. that is something that has happened to every single member at one time or another. We are all experts at gaining, losing and regaining the weight. that was the past. you can't change the past, but you can influence and change the future.

I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this, "Don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". If the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.

Spark People encourages all its members to start with simple changes first. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Set some simple goals. Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. If you're not exercising, don't try to do an hour a day, set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved these goals, then you can set new ones.

No "all or nothing", just a few simple changes you CAN stick with.

Also, if you found it difficult to stick to a low carb diet, then that probably wasn't the right nutritional plan for you. This is a lifestyle change, not a diet. What you're eating now will be what you eat for life. so, if you don't feel as if you can eat low carb for your entire life, then you need to find a nutritional plan you can live with. And that's not easy. That's the holy grail of weight loss.

Mostly, be patient with yourself and your body. Remember, one small change can change your life.

Apologies in advance for this, as I will ramble a bit! I've never really been one for community help or sharing things,but it's worth a go if anybody can just give me some support?

I was doing really well with a low carb diet for 6 weeks. Incredibly well in fact, I didn't even feel the need to cheat once. The weight loss was amazing and I was feeling great.

And then...well I could add loads of excuses as to why I went off plan. I did have some disruption in my life but that's no excuse really is it. Literally overnight, BAM, I ate like a pig...and kept going.

I have tried nearly daily to get back on track, but always fail. At the weekend I ate far too much junk food, including pizza and was very sick. I always get tummy problems when I eat too much junk or wheat, but I just gave in.

Today is going far, but I could really just do with a little support or encouragement. How have you all got back on track?

I haven't dared weigh for weeks to be honest, and my food tracker will be inaccurate for about 3 weeks. I am dreading getting on those scales as I will be distraught.All my hard work would have been for nothing.

Sorry for whining, it's not like me at all.
