Listen, You can do this. I am 57 and I am loving Spark People. I have about 80 pounds to lose to and I have been on SP a little over a month and have lost 9 pounds. Do I always stay with it every day. Nope, but it is my safety net. Keep working on it and make it work for you. There are so many changes that SP can help you with. I'll give you a few words of advice and do with it what you want. Just looked at the average age for women and it is 81 for women in the US. So sweetie, if you are average then you have 20 more years to live...but this also means that you may live to be a lot older. You need to set some goals that you want to achieve in the next 20 years....Call it a bucket list or whatever. Find 3 people your age or about your age (who are positive thinking) and make some plans to do some things that make you happy or make someone else happy. (a foursome is great for going out to eat, go to the movie etc.) Volunteer at a nursing home and then you will see how blessed you are. Get out and exercise. You don't have to pay a lot of money to walk, basically the price of a good pair of walking shoes. Walk in the mall if it is too hot to walk outside. Get a friend or someone you know to walk with you. Odds are you know several others who need to walk as much as you do. Sorry, I am not trying to be mean just want you to know that life has a lot to offer. Make a list of 10 things that you would like for someone to do for you, then do one of those things for 10 other people and see how much better you feel. Hey, I just thought about the movie: "Fried Green Tomatoes". Rent it and see if that helps any. I wish you the best! I would be proud for you to stay in contact with me. I have 2 jobs and plan to keep working until I am 70 just to be sure I have the money to pay for the things I want to do to keep life interesting.

CRAFTYLADY.... I'm glad your later post was a little more upbeat.. we all get those down days.. I'm 62, and try to look at it as just a number. I teach high school.. a few years ago a kid asked how old I was.. so I told him the truth. He got a shocked look, said, "My God, if I was that old I'd shoot myself!" I found it horribly funny and couldn't stop laughing, but I did have the perfect comeback... "If I had to be 16 again, I'd shoot MYSELF!" We run into each other occasionally and laugh about it still.
Which brings me to a thought... to stay young, you're already doing one great thing.. taking care of the body; but take care of the mind, too. Do something you've never done before, read a new author, listen to new music, talk to someone new...
One of my favorite quotations is from Stephen Bruton: What makes you grow old is replacing hope with regret.

I will be 65 in September and i just started sparks because nothing else has been working. i would like to lose 50 lbs but honestly if i could lose 20 i would be very happy. I know how depressing it can be. But please don't give up. I was on it for a week now and didn't lose anything so just a few minutes ago i found an old bag of potato chips 1 oz hidden away in my pantry. I tackled it like i never ate before. Then i felt guilty and was going to cheat and not record it but i decided. Hey i'm human...i'm still under my calories for the day and i was feeling depressed over being so careful all week and nothing to show for it. It killed me to get on that treadmill every day but i did. Anyway, tomorrow starts a new week for me and i will keep trying. Hey at least i didn't gain anything this week. Who knows maybe next week the weight will start to come off. Don't give up. Good luck!

Nice to see that you've gotten a lot of good responses. You are never too old to make a healthy decision. It's one decision at a time, one day at a time. I keep the saying move it or lose it in mind. I use that to remember to do yoga, stretch, lift weights, bike, swim, etc. Our future is what we make out of a whole lot of todays.
Bad habits are tough to break, but it can be done with continued baby steps, trial and error, and the will to succeed. hang in there! You can do this.

It is never too late!!!!! Start with smaller goals, then when you accomplish them you will have motivation to take on a few more smaller goals and before you know you will be accomplishing bigger goals through your smaller goals!

Crafty-You know that there is so much more for you in this world. I do believe we all have a choice. As I read your post and I read the one that came after I thought to myself. So why can't I stop feeling sorry for myself and instead get my arse of the coach and do something. So I did get up and go for a run for the first time on three years. For the first time in a long time I felt in control. Not my bad back,hypothyroidism blah blah. I was in control. Thank you for inspiring me.
First of all, making some positive healthy choices for your life will probably extend years, you may very well have another 30 or more healthy years. There are some people who take up dancing well into their 90's, one woman got her doctorate at 76. Many start new careers in their 60's. You are young, with so much ahead of you. They say, "you're only as old as you think" that's why some seniors accomplish so much, and some 30yr olds feel like 80. Time for a mind shift perhaps.

I love the saying "life is not black and white...it's gray". At each point of our lives age can be a cope out excuse for not being what we can be at the moment. This is not an above ground, below the ground decision. That is very black and white. This is about blooming. Getting greater flexibility so that you can reach something that you couldn't before. Setting an example for the game/computer/cell phone crowd that you do remember a day when life had more going on...and you can turn that memory into action now.
I agree with Ivy...below find a reason to smile each day. If you can't, seek a doctor that will help you on this path. Don't waste the days you do have living one foot in. I know this because last summer I truly had my life span tested and when you think, I'd better get stuff in order because I may only had a couple months left....there is still a lot you do have to do and many people in your life that would be *(&^# if you didn't try your darnest. So that mind thought needs to get thrown to the curb.
WooHoo...you are here! You have a choice to life well...in mind body and spirit. Dust yourself off and start a new day because there are some amazing ones yet to come.

If patience is your problem, set a lot of short time goals. Like loosing 6 lbs, adding 15 minutes of biking every week, tasting a new vegetable/recipe once a week, using stairs at least 2 times a day etc. Use sparkstreaks and goals to track these. I love reaching my STgoals and every time I reach one, I know that Im closer to my ultimate goal. And ENJOY the journey, life is here and now, not in some -50lb-land!

I suggest that you google Ed Whitlock, Jack Lalanne, Fauja Singh...people who certainly did not believe that life is over at 60.
You don't know a single person over 60 who has done amazing things? Please go out and find some role models, they are everywhere.
I have a 72 year old client who looks at least 20 years younger, can lift almost as much as I can, and is so full of life that I was amazed when she told me her age. Her secret? never live life letting your AGE dictate things.

"...after reading what I just wrote I guess I am making progress..." yeah, I would say so! Patience isn't easy, but it's very, very useful (helps sometimes...at least makes me chuckle to remember...that 'patience' has it root in the word "suffer." We aren't supposed to LIKE being patient, but we are supposed to do it.)
Try blending your veggies and adding them to things, like soup or pasta sauce (homemade if you can--too much sodium otherwise). Mom used to do that b/c Dad was a "meat-and-potatoes-kind-of-guy" and his doctor got snarky about it. Dad never noticed, or, when he did, he said he didn't mind them that way; it was 'rabbit food' he wouldn't eat.
Have you seen the (old, now) posters that show seniors looking tough and ready with the caption "old age is not for sissies." As I see 60 starting to loom on my horizon, I remember those.

CRAFTY, you seem to have a very negative outlook about a lot of things. Life over at 60? My father is in his 70s and every summer he and my step-mom hop in their RV and go see this wonderful country. They're in West Yellowstone, Montana again and having a blast.
Keep doing the exercising, since you like that. I'm not sure what you mean by not having success incorporating more fruits and veggies. Is it the cost? The taste?
There are a lot of resources here and it can be very overwhelming. So, let's just do one thing at a time. You're on a good streak with the exercise, so keep going. Next, let's just drink more water. You can do that...aim for eight glasses a day. Or, if you drink soda, start cutting that out.
And finally, I want you to find one thing a day that makes you smile. It can be a lovely flower, a beautiful sunset, a funny poem. But each day, note one thing that makes you smile.
If you want inspiration, search for INDYGIRL. She will blow your mind with her accomplishments.
It may seem like you are not making progress, but, look at what you've done so far! 6 pounds down. Treadmill for 3 weeks. Finding yummy healthy recipes. Starting to ride a bike. These are all excellent.
My suggestion would be to find foods you like. The suggestion about fresh local foods being tastier is spot on. If you find you only like fresh carrots and frozen green beans, then eat lots of those. Every time you select a healthy food, you give your body a present. Don't you want lots of presents?
Here's a stupid diet trick for smoothies. I usually make a smoothie with banana, fruit juice, yogurt or coconut milk, and something fresh, like blueberries or strawberries. Then I add a 1" piece of a small zucchini. I don't taste it in the smoothie, and over the course of a week, I have gotten another serving of vegetable in my diet.

You are still quite young! The fastest growing segment of the population is 80 and older. I am 67 and I started getting serious on Jan. 1. I have lost 16 pounds. Yes, it is coming off slowly but it is also staying off. If you continue to make choices each day to eat right and move more you will eventually arrive at your goal. I am rooting for you.
Thank you so much for your advice. When I started this journey I knew I had to take baby steps but what happened to that train of thought I don't know. I'm going to get back to that. I'm going to try getting fruits into my diet by making smoothies and sorbets. I tried one today after I purchased a Magic Bullet. A banana and blueberries. No sugar either. Tasted pretty yummy. I'll try to figure out the veggie part too. I agree...if I can find foods that I like then it will be a lot easier.
I have to admit that I'm not a very patient person. Looks like that's going to have to change.
I have stuck with walking on the treadmill for 3 weeks now and I do enjoy it. I enjoy riding my bike too and even got my husband to buy a bike and join me.
After reading what I just wrote I guess I am making progress. I'll just keep taking it slow and easy and not get overwhelmed anymore.

I’m 60. I think success is mostly attitude. You label yourself as defeatist, which mentally puts you at a huge disadvantage. If you quit eating healthy and exercising, you’ll miss a lot of wonderful life experiences.
You ask what to do about it. Each person is different. This is what works for me. I make everything related to eating and exercise fun--my husband says it’s a hobby. Your metabolism is horrible because you just started moving. Give your body time to show changes! It’s great that you use your bike and treadmill and do some strength exercises if that is fun for you. If not, find something you love. There are classes and DVD’s for seniors. I like the TV show Sit and Be Fit on PBS. Tai Chi is slow and it builds muscles and improves balance. You say you’re having trouble adding fruit and veggies to your diet. They are part of any healthy eating plan. Fiber in these foods makes weight loss easier. Keep trying different veggies prepared in different ways and in different recipes until you find what you like. Roasting makes any veggie taste great. Choose an eating plan you can live with. I like South Beach Diet (team on this site) because it tells me what to eat and when (no thinking unless I want to make great recipes). Batch cooking gives me lots of time to play.
You set a goal that you think is unrealistic--self-sabotage! Instead of 70 lbs by June, 2013, consider breaking into 10 lb segments (about 1 clothing size) and skip the date. If you follow your eating and exercise plan, you will reach your goal.

Craftylady -- You can do this but you have to get your head around more than diet & exercise. I am 60 this year and while the present is not exactly the way I would prefer it, the future still offers possibilities!
When I get completely down on myself and my circumstances I focus on what I'm grateful for. Then things start to show up that remind me why I get up every day, why I go to work and enjoy my life. For me the top "gratitudes" this week have been: -- Friends who really care about me -- Job skills that should keep me employed for quite a while yet -- Free exercise opportunities (to walk, play, stretch, even without a gym) -- Choices about what I eat -- I think of those too poor to make such choices!
Hope you'll take the time to look at all you're doing RIGHT for your health, your spirit and your life. It is a marathon, not a sprint. But like the turtle, not the hare, you can make it with persistence and commitment.
You can do it, CRAFTYLADY! At 63, my dad was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and it was just the wakeup call he needed to change his eating habits. He's always been active, so he had that going for him, but, as they say, you can't outrun a bad diet! By watching his portions and his sugar intake, he's lost 25 pounds and is healthier at 65 than he was at 55. If he can do it, you can too. Hang in there!

From 64-65, my Mom lost 100 pounds. She did it through Food Addicts, a very strict support group. It is possible, but you have to be positive.

Hey there. I'm a professor and study aging for a living. Right now, I'm writing a chapter about the negative consequences if people accept stereotypes about their age. Please don't let that happen to you! All the evidence suggests that even though metabolism declines somewhat with age, people can lose weight, gain muscle mass, and reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle at any age. I've seen colleagues of mine teach weight training to 90+ year old nursing home residents with amazing results. - On a personal level, my own mother finally listened to me a couple of years ago, she joined a gym, started tracking her intake and has just reached her goal weight! So, the take home message is: You can do it! - and as you make progress make sure to post on the boards so others can benefit from your role model.

Psst! Come here; I've got something to tell you: YOU'RE WRONG! You are NOT "too old" for Spark OR for enjoying the rest of your life.
Taking the excess weight off - no matter how slowly you do it - will add life to your years and possibly years to your life.
I am 50, at an age where metabolism can rear it's ugly head for women, and using the tools here on Spark, I've lost 50+ lbs over the last year. Compared to other times when I've lost weight (and regained it) in my younger days, this time was the easiest! I'm not saying you won't have to work at it, but it had none of the drama and horribleness (is that a word?) of the other times.
I didn't use a scale or tape measure (just went by clothing fit & dropped sizes), and now my AM walk / run is the BEST part of my day.
You will be amazed at how much better your outlook is when you don't have the weight holding you prisoner. What to do now, as you are working towards that goal? Behave "as if." As much as you can. Get out there and make some fun for yourself. Life is happening right now and get out there and make a difference. What can you do to bless someone else?
Yes, weight loss is more about what we eat than anything. Once I accepted that it became a lot easier for me. I was NOT a veggie person before but am now their biggest advocate because I've seen first hand what they can do. Had I only known before, I wouldn't have spent most of my 40's miserable about my weight. But at least I get it now so from here on out, it's a different ballgame. Better late than never, right?
Don't try to change everything all at once; don't stress out. Every day that you make more good choices than poor ones, that's a success. No one's perfect and that's what I LOVE about SP: there is no room for (perceived) perfection here. Hallelujah!
Just this morning on my run, a lady asked me w/ a smile, "Are you even the same person?!" The answer is yes & no. I'm the same, only better and with a bit less of me. You can have all this and MORE if you just don't quit, work on changing your attitude a bit, and try to enjoy the ride. It always starts in the mind first. When (not if) you stumble or fall, just get back up and continue. It's so simple and people make it seem so much harder. Just get back up. Period. Done.
You are probably waaay smarter and have the wisdom of another decade over me, so if I can do it, YOU can do it, too.
Hang in there and keep up the great work you are doing so far. Baby steps. Add to it as you go along. You got this! I would focus less about "X amt of lbs by a certain date" and just focus on getting into the healthy lifestyle. Once you embrace it, the rest will fall more easily into place.
This time next year (even in 6 mos!), you will be SO different if you JUST DON'T QUIT.

It definitely NOT to late to make changes to your health !! Every little bit does make a difference. You're doing this right by starting with some simple changes. If you're not a big fan of fruit, then eat more veggies. That's okay. Eat the fruits you do like. Also, try to eat the fruits that are in season. They'll taste better and will cost less. Right now, blueberries are in season. You might try putting some blueberries on your more cereal for a little extra boost in anti-oxidants.

Every little bit does add up. Even if you don't lose 80 pounds by next year, losing 50-60 would still be an amazing accomplishment. Your doctor is going to be thrilled with any changes you make over the next year. because one small change leads to another and another and another. Before you know it, all those small changes add up into one big accomplishment.
My 86 year old aunty fell and broke her hip last year. I was shocked at her state when I saw her. She looked so old and frail. I didn't think she was going to make it. Well, one year later (after rehab, some strength training and good food), she's literally back up on her feet walking around. she has to use a walker, but she is so much stronger and isn't being taken around in a wheelchair. She looks like the aunt I remember before her hip replacement. So, if my 85 year old aunty can recover from a hip replacement, you can make changes to your life to lose the weight.

I ALWAYS say it is never too late or you are never too old to make a change in your life. Good for you for taking this step in improving your health. Just take one day at a time. Sometimes when you look at the big picture it is overwelming (sp?). I know it is for me. It takes time to make new habits and break old ones. Just keep pushing toward your goal.

You are NEVER too old to change your lifestyle! I started running over 6 years ago at the tender age of 44 and my life has never been the same. It took me 3 1/2 years to lose 80 pounds and I must say while the journey is never easy, when one focuses on making this a lifestyle and not just a quick means to get the weight off, it will get easier. I am 7 years into my own journey (started at age 43) and I am proud to say, not only did I lose the weight, but healthy living is my way of living. While I still have to take a med for my high blood pressure, I know that each day I chose to live a healthy lifestyle I gain so much more.
You can do this! Don't feel the need to change everything at one time as this can be very overwhelming. When I started in Feb 2005, I could only manage 10 minutes on the elliptical 3 times a day...fast forward to today and I am able to run well over 2 hours. I didn't go from the elliptical to running overnight...it was truly patience and perseverance and the belief that I deserved to live a healthy lifestyle.
When I turned 60 I felt my life was over. I have nothing to look forward to except death. I tried to change my mindset about this when I turned 61. I thought that I would join SparkPeople and try and lose 80 pounds by June of next year. Now I'm thinking that's not very realistic for me because I'm old and my metabolism is horrible. I started exercising 3 weeks ago.....treadmill, biking, and some strength exercises. I'm okay with doing that. The diet on the other hand is screwing with my head. I'm not particularly fond of fruit but I've been trying to eat more. Haven't been successful at that. I'm trying to incorporate more veggies into my diet. Haven't been succssful at that either. I see the reports about my eating and they say that I need more protein and carbs. So I did research on what I should eat. The more reading I did the more frustrated I became. I have a defeatest attitude now and don't know what to do about it. I thought I would post here to see if I could get some help before I quit for good.
