It's actually pretty simple to make your own--you can google instructions on the web--and the materials are relatively cheap and very easy to find. My church fitness group made a bunch of them at one of our meetings. Great fun! I'd suggest that rather than the children's toys.

I wouldn't mind trying hula hooping, but my hips won't cooperate. I tried the weighted hula hoop from a friend and the blasted thing just rolled around my generous sized hips and dropped to the ground.

You don't need one, but for fitness the weighted hula hoop is great.
You can burn 100 calories in 15 minutes if you keep it moving.
I do if from time to time when I am watching television.
