After I'd lost about 20 pounds some people commented. But I expect people noticed before then. People have to be sure they're not going to offend you before they'll say anything. The real issue is: do you notice yourself.

I think I lost about 20 pounds before anyone really noticed, but I honestly can't remember.

Took about 40 lbs before anyone noticed....that's what happens when I was REALLY FAT...I had to lose a lot before it made a difference!

11/28/12 11:20 A

A friend (who did know that I was losing weight and that I had started running) was telling me she could tell I'd lost and my shape was changing after 15 pounds or so.

About 30 pounds down, a very sweet coworker who I like very much crept up behind me and said "you're shrinking away to nothing!" I wasn't expecting it so I think I was just like "" (there was no one else in the office, it was like 7:30pm, hahaha) but I wasn't offended, just surprised.

My work pants are super baggy so I'm guessing people will either start to notice that, or will notice when I get new pants that fit, all "hey, you're smaller!" but they may or may not comment, depends on the person.

Before "others" outside of my family noticed, half of the weight I intend to lose was when a few have noticed - that is 27 pounds of the 54 lb goal.

I think the more we have to lose the less noticeable it is until a good amount of it is gone.

Initially it was 20 lbs before anyone mentioned anything. I've been at the same weight for about a year and recently lost 6 lbs. and a lot of people noticed. I'm not sure how I feel about that. haha

I work with very supportive people. Although I didn't notice any change until about 20lbs were gone, my coworkers started mentioning my weight loss after 10. They sure make it worth the effort. I am now at 180 and started at 240. Hard work and still a work in progress, but getting there.

my first 12lbs were very noticeable as I was gaining muscle at the same time and clothes were also getting to be too big on me - it was amazing how quickly it took effect (I think it was around 8--10 weeks in!)

11/28/12 8:54 A

I plan to lose around 100 lbs. Hubby noticed after about 15, as well as my close co-workers. I am not down 28 lbs, more than 25% of what I hope to lose, and no one else has noticed, or if they have, they haven't mentioned it yet.

When I was at my highest (161 pounds), people really started commenting after I lost 30 pounds. This time, my SW being 130, people started noticing not too long ago, when I got to about 115 pounds. Now I'm just about at goal (I'm short, so my goal weight is 110, which is what my doc recommends for me). Maintenance is going to be the really tough part for me as it's so easy to let the weight creep back on. Thank goodness for SP! I think beiing a part of this community, whether I'm doing well or struggling majorly, I'm much more apt to get back on track and stick to my goals. Thanks to all!

Around the 20-25 lb mark everyone I know started talking about it. At that point it was clearly not just a fluctuation. People started congratulating me and asking my advice. That's also about when I got in range of a normal, healthy BMI.

I lost 30 lbs total last year, then gained about 10 of it back, and have re-lost about 7 of those. I vacillate in the 25-30 lbs down from what I was two years ago range. Now that everyone knows it's okay to talk to me about it, they seem more willing to comment on little differences to try to be encouraging.

No one says anything when I lose weight, only when I gain it. When I gained the first 20lbs from my pregnancy every one talked behind my back that I was getting fat again and I looked so awful and blah blah. I kept the pregnancy a secret as long as I could and just let them keep talking. They are all overweight as well so I'm sure when I lose weight it kind of burns them.

11/27/12 10:22 P

I think most ppl notice long before they'll comment. Some feel it's rude or would be uncomfortable talking about something so personal. Others won't comment b/c they worry about awkwardness if you gain the weight back! Some won't comment b/c they are a little jealous. Others just don't know how to give a compliment about weight loss. It seems to them like they would be saying "you were so fat before now!" KWIM?

I think this is why we have to learn to be our own cheerleaders in the beginning. It's a great tool to be able to cheer yourself on when no one else seems to notice. I think it may even be necessary if we're going to keep going for the long haul.

Let me say... I think you're doing GREAT! emoticon

When I lost the first 15 lbs, my friends and family were telling me I looked half my weight LOL...that was about 70 lbs ago. It was very encouraging. I feel really really bad for people who lose much more than that but don't have people say anything or don't notice, because I would find that difficult...I will reluctantly admit to some vanity and finding the comments of others to be a motivator for me.

People seem to notice/re-notice about every ten pounds with me.

What's really fun is to run into people that you haven't seen in a year or more and for them to tell you that you look terrific! I've heard this from people I barely know (like a lady who used to do my hair, a cashier at a yarn shop, an old dance companion) so it must be true. :)

In any case, it feels *great.*

Given my petite size I shouldn't loose more than 10-15 pounds, and I have lost 10 pounds. My sister noticed over thanksgiving, but my own boyfriend and other friends/family don't see a difference and/or haven't said anything. I noticed it in myself after about 8 pounds.

I lost 30 lbs after my divorce. When I started going out in "public" again, my old friends noticed that I had lost the weight.

11/27/12 2:26 P

For me it was around 30lbs - I had lost and gained the same 20lbs so many times over the last 10 years that I think everyone in my life just expected me to put it back on again. Once I got past that and it was evident that I had finally figured out this healthy lifestyle change, everyone seemed to notice at once! I've lost a total of 61lbs now and I get comments on the loss almost every day. I think the best compliment that people can pay me when they haven't seen me in a long time is that they say they didn't recognize me. The best thing about those compliments is that they are highly motivational... it keeps me on track and helps me plough forward!

It was over 20lbs before anybody said anything. And the first person to say something was my mostly blind grandmother! She can only see shapes, but I was still wearing big clothes (though they were baggy). It was months before anybody at work said something. My brother & his wife (I only see a few times a year) have never said anything and a friend I saw once a week didn't notice until we didn't see each other for a month. A lot of people aren't very observant or just don't mention it. Also, if they see you all the time and you are gradually losing weight, they may not really notice until you start wearing slimmer styled clothing.

For me it was about 30lbs. No one noticed (or said anything) before and then all at once everyone started to notice and comment. It was very strange at first.

11/27/12 11:35 A

I read somewhere that your close friends and family notice first, and it may take acquaintances and coworkers longer. Like 30 lbs. It definitely took close to 30 for me before people said anything. I've lost 55 total now and I feel better than I have in 20 years : )

I'd say maybe at around 20 lbs lost. Of course, some people still haven't noticed, and I've lost more than 70 lbs now. Go figure!

For me it was 10lbs.

I'm thinking it'll be harder for people to notice your weight loss during colder months since we're all bundled up under layers. You should wear a form fitting sweaterdress to a holiday gathering and the complitments will start to pour in!

SHELAGHB Posts: 13

I think 15lbs was about when people started to notice. With that said, I've received more compliments in the past month when my body fat percentage change yet the scale didn't move much.

Body fat % is a much better indicator of visual and physical success. They scale doesn't always tell the whole story. For example, rapid weight loss often is a combination of fat and muscle loss. :( Without proper balance of exercise and nutrition you could actually be setting yourself back. I personally think the investment in a once per month Bod Pod is a better measure.

Actually, none. My flab started firming up and my muscles got stronger, so the scale had stayed about the same at the time I got a couple of comments about looking good. You have no idea how much people take notice of "muffin top" in particular.

It took more than 20 lbs down before anyone noticed. I think it's because the weight loss is so gradual rather than unhealthily fast.

My now-husband noticed within about 5 pounds, as well as my mother and sister (I think because I was more diligent with my muscle work; even though I didn't lose much at that time, I did look a little different). For others, it took about 15 lbs.

I do absolutely think it is more about percentage of weight versus the actual number of pounds. 15 pounds for me was 7.6% lost. 15 pounds for someone weighting 250 is only 6%. 7.6% would probably be more noticeable.

Because I have so much to lose, the last time I lost a lot of weight, it took about 40lbs for people to start to notice.

Hi there!

I was wondering for those on the weight loss journey or those at goal weight, How much weight did you lose before someone noticed? Was it more a perecentage of your total weight or just a certain number of pounds, or a size?

I have lost about 17 lbs and no one has notied yet, I am hoping by the end of December if I stay on track and lose 5-7 more lbs, they will see a difference. I know I have seen a difference.
