My mom really loves wrapping and unwrapping packages, so our whole family tends to exchange lots of little things. Growing up, if we got a toy that needed batteries, more than once she wrapped the toy, then each individual battery! I sometimes spend almost as much on paper and ribbon as I do on gifts. It can take us all morning to unwrap $25 worth of gifts.

we set a $$$ limit every year.

Since our kids are now adults we gave them a couple of small personal gifts and a grocery gift card. Our parents gave them gas cards. When they were younger we went with the dollar amount per kid, and that kept it "fair".

My child is an adult now and it's not about the gifts anymore. Don't get me wrong, we get each other a gift, but it's not our focus.

My parents usually give me, my hubby, my brother in law and my sister each 1 big gift and a few small ones. I'd say they look at things we need and buy those and make sure they spend about the same on each "kid," I'd say they spend about $150 per "kid." My in-laws give us $100 to use on something fun and some clothes for each of us. They don't have grandkids yet so I'm sure things will change in a few years. My sister and I usually spend about $200 on my parents at Christmas. It usually depends on what they want that they would never buy themselves.

Ages 5 and 4. One toy each. If they accidentally receive more than one that year, they are blessed to pick which one to keep and the others are (unopened) donated. They usually ask if they can take them to Church; I think they love the look on our Minister's face when they bring him in donations; he has such a way with making them feel good about helping others and he makes them laugh.
Clothes, shoes, etc are as needed. Stocking stuffer is toothbrush and floss.

Several years back, we decided to limit gifts to 3 each. The kids can & do gift each other, but we told them the wise men brought 3 special gifts to the Christ child and it would seem that 3 are enough.
This year is different yet in that we (parents) are not giving any gifts under the tree. Each person had different needs that were addressed in the past 6 weeks. The amount we contributed added to about the same for each person, and we said that was their "Christmas" gift for this season.

Usually one big gift, and then a few smaller items. The smaller things are often handmade (e.g. new knit sweater, crocheted cuddly toy, etc.). We have a very big family, so if every child gets just one thing from each family member, it can get pretty overwhelming.

As many as I can comfortably afford

Usually just get one big gift. Few years ago it was a laptop. Last year it was a 3DS. This year it was new phones which they needed anyway.

Depends on the age of the child and the cost involved with each gift.

I have always set a dollar amount and always make sure both of my kids have the same amount of presents so there isn't any bickering! I usually spend between $150-$200 per kid as most of my relatives are several thousand miles away and do not normally send anything to them. I have to keep to a budget though because I am a single parent who has to make ends meet!

We set a budget for gifts and bought things that fit our budget. It happened to be 7 things this year plus stuff for her stocking.

What do you think is appropriate? do you shop with a certain number of gifts in mind, or a certain price range?
