And yet there seems to be no source. Every article I could find claiming 400 calories an hour referenced Clark, but while there were links on some, not one took me to any article written by Clark. They link only to websites, not articles, and I simply cannot find the original cite on that.
Jillian MIchaels writes sports nutrition advice too, so forgive me if I would still like to see the actual source of that figure before accepting it...

ACE is a reputable website and the certifying body for fitness professionals and even conducts its own independent research. The author of the article is Julia Valentour, M.S., EMT-B, is an American Heart Association Training Center Coordinator, and a media spokesperson for ACE. She teaches ACE courses including Heartsaver and the Integrated Fitness Training workshop. Along with being a certified EMT, she holds fitness certifications by ACE and the American College of Sports Medicine. Julia obtained her M.S. in Kinesiology from Georgia Southern University and has taught Kinesiology for California State University San Marcos. Before coming to ACE, she spent several years working for the Navy where she served as the Afloat Fitness Director aboard the aircraft carrier USS NIMITZ.
Nancy Clark, MS, RD, CSSD, is author of the best-selling sports nutrition reference “Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook.” Not only does she practice what she preaches when fueling her own workouts, such as a long run to train for a marathon, but she also shares this information with her clients, including Olympic athletes and members of the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics.
I can't account for where Clark's article appeared, but these are not unreliable, fly-by-night authors.

And I am with Coach Nancy. Shivering does burn calories as does any thing us to remain alive but it doesn't really count as cardio.
By the way, slightly warmer temps are on the way.

While you do burn calories shivering, this is not a cardio activity (cardio is any activity that increases oxygen consumption in relation to large muscle activation), therefore consider this a bonus.

Not as crazy as it sounds.
"When a person is shivering, the body needs to work harder to maintain thermoregulation (body temperature). According to Nancy Clark, M.S., R.D., shivering can burn about 400 calories per hour and it depletes glycogen stores and leaves you feeling fatigued."
