I would go one step further and make sure you have at least 1 year's running experience, and experience running 5Ks, 10Ks and at least 1 HM before tackling a full. Generally training for a full marathon is 16 weeks.

Starting with a 1/2 marathon is definitely a good idea. Then you can see how much you like it, how easy it is to train, etc. If you're a regular runner now, you should have no problem progressing up to the 1/2 distance.

I can jog 6 miles without dying at 11 min pace... how long should it take me to train for a Marathon? Should I start with a half Marathon?
