Your weight is about a day in and out. A random party or going overboard once an while will not make that big of a difference. Remember it takes 3500 extra calories to gain a pound. Part of food is to enjoy as well and is a social event. If you watch portion sizes that is helpful. Also for myself instead of grazing around a buffet if I focus on making a plate that I would be served as a meal and then a portion of a dessert I feel more satisfied then bits and pieces.
I will only take small portions of my fave foods. And eat only till 3 quarter's full. Not bursting!

Since my co workers know I am working to lose weight and get healthy, they understand me not eating certain foods. When we go to eat at restaurants, I do my research and find what I can enjoy and afford before hand.

I agree with BDAD. I am not going to hide just because I am trying to lose weight. Where is the fun in that?
My game plan is one plate of yummy food, one desert and one drink. I can have as much water as I want.

I try to avoid them as I am a HUGE fan of party food. I try to plan ahead, but I enjoy all those delicious food choices that you don't normally have on a typical day. Allowing yourself the luxury of a taste of everything will help you not feel deprived and overeat.
Everything is a choice. If I eat a fattening thing here and there doesn't mean I am totally derailed. I just have to make a better choice with my next meal/snack. I'm not going to deprive myself at all the parties or beat myself up over it

I had one today that was a pot luck. I brought my own lunch and didn't eat the goodies I brought or what my co workers brought. It was hard but I did it!

First, I try to eat BEFORE I go to the party so I'm not very hungry, even if it's a dinner party. Then I try to look over everything that is available to eat before I get anything. I pick and choose.
My philosophy is that if I'm going to eat something sweet, I try my best to make it something very special, and even then, I limit the portion size and how often I eat sweets.
Often, there will be veggie trays or fruit trays, which are PERFECT for grazing. If there are dips with them, I take a LITTLE dip.
Finally, make sure to schedule workout time around the party. If I know that I worked out the day before and the day of, I don't get nearly as concerned. You can also include a workout the day after the party.

Holiday parties are here! And they really are troublesome to my week of being super good, then I have a party.
