Long slow distance work the current research says causes stress on the body which elicits cortisol a fat retaining hormone. My question is are you strength training? If you are not you are burning 25% muscle and not just fat which will slow your metabolism.

HIIT is a great add on for running training but not a cure all for anything, it is another training method. Here is a hyperlink to an excellent article on HIIT and how to incorporate it into your training.

Coach Nancy,
Thank you... I am looking for weight loss. I have plateaued and gotten burnt out with long distance running (10-20 miles on weekends and 5-6/day during the week). I am looking for something to just change things up but also keep me running, which I love.

Are these intervals aimed at making you faster for racing or weight loss?

Below are a couple articles I located, but keep in mind you do not want to do interval training more than 1-2 times a week. The reason, your injury rate may elevate in response to the higher intensity, not to mention your goal is to develop a full-rounded running program that activates ALL the energy systems your body requires to be a well-balanced and efficient runner.

I hope this helps!

Coach Nancy

I have been running long distance for quite some time and want to try something new. I feel my body can run forever and has gotten use to it. I have heard/seen great things on HIIT but I am having problems finding a running HIIT program to follow. I have read that it can be customary, i.e., 5 min warmup, 30 sec spring, 90 sec jog... repeard 8-10 x... I am just curious what others do, what they recommend and may a good website? For running long distance there are a ton of training plans (Hal Higdon my favorite) but not much that I can really find on HIIT. Thanks in advance.
