Hello All,

My name is Linda and I've been a member for several years - but just started using the site faithfully last September. I need to lose a total of 100 pounds, and in the past several months, I have lost 25 pounds - which is one forth of my total goal! Yay! emoticon

The good news is that this weight loss is being done slowly, sensibly and in a healthy manner - hopefully when these new habits are formed, I can expect my weight loss to be permanent. At age 59, I can hardly afford another failure! emoticon

The bad news is that I find that I am starting to bog down now that my initial "honeymoon" period has passed and I realize that I still have 75% of my journey to go. So I am reaching out for help and support from the Spark People community. Now is not the time to slow down, but it is the time to beef up my efforts and pull out all the stops. emoticon

Basic diet is the Schwarzbein Principle of 2000 - 2500 calories per day, with about 100 - 150 grams of carbs per day. In addition to that, I am using a daily "bursting" routine with an exercise bike 3 days per week and an Xiser ( ) on alternate days. I am also learning Pilates for core strength and walking for endurance. I love the bursting because it is so refreshing and takes so little time from my day. My husband and I both agree that short bursts have changed our lives and restored some of our ebbing youth.

My biggest challenges: My sweet tooth and my emotional eating. I have decided to try and lose my taste for sweets altogether, so my diet is not including any desserts - no artificial sweeteners, no non-calorie natural sweeteners, and no form of sugar. ARRGH! They say it can be done, and I came through the holidays unscathed. Emotional eating is going to take a kind of determination that I have never found in myself, but I feel that it is never too late to grow.

The most important health issues that I struggle with include Celiac Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and Osteoarthritis in my right knee. My Orthopedic Surgeon says that I need a total knee replacement, but I am going to try to avoid that, if possible. My grandmother had the same condition and kept her natural knee until her death at age 96. As long as I can walk, I will do the same.

There is a clinic in my area that is using a new treatment for osteoarthritis called "Orthopedic Stem Cell Therapy" and they tell me that I will be a good candidate for this treatment when I get my weight under 200 pounds. The treatment consists of taking bone marrow from the patient's own bones and extracting stem cells from the bone marrow. Then, the stem cells are injected into the affected joints, stimulating the growth of new cartilage. They say that 50% of folks who try this therapy are helped enough to avoid total joint replacement, and the cost of this procedure is a fraction of a joint replacement. I look forward to being accepted as a patient this coming fall when my lighter body weight will give me the best possible chance of improving without radical surgery.
