I use a heart rate monitor when running and I regularly run with my heart rate in the 160s - I have been in the 180s when doing a 5k race and going all out. Rough guide to max heart rate is 220 minus your age so roughly 190 would be the absolute max for you so 150-170 is well within that. Also bear in mind that heart rate monitors are not always that accurate, especially during hard workouts, so they may actually be overestimating your actual heart rate. I would think as long as you are working at a level you feel comfortable to sustain without any ill effects and you don't have any other health issues, then I would consider the heart rates you specify would be fine for a hard cardio workout. Obviously, if you do have other health issues or concerns it is always worth mentioning it to a physician.

That shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't have any symptoms. The age-based heart rate formulas aren't an exact science, so your real maximum could be different from what's predicted. The two things (other than obvious symptoms) to watch out for would be your heart rate not coming down much within a couple minutes after you back off on the intensity of your activity, or when there's a big change in heart rate without a change in intensity that explains it.

I poked around and didn't see any clear answers, so I pose the following question:
If one is comfortable, albeit working at an 8-10 on the RPE scale, and one's heart rate is far out of the recommended 'max' zone, are there any dangers?
Age: 26-30, Resting Heart Rate: unknown, but sitting still for a few minutes it's around 75, so I'd assume it's lower than that.
According to my monitor I often keep my rate between 150-155 during cardio workouts, but often I spike it into the 160's, or even the low 170s, for anywhere from 1-10 min. at a time. Is there any harm in this as long as I don't feel lightheaded/etc? I warm up and cool down appropriately, and when I slow down for 1-2 min it quickly drops back down to the mid 150s/upper 140s.
