I really like the Nike Fuel band. It measures footsteps, heart rate, calories burned etc. And it's on the wrist.

I ended up going with the FT7. I thought about the FT40 but figured the FT7 does what
I need it to. I lucked out bc I ended up getting a gift card for my birthday so I didn't have
to pay the full amount out of pocket lol. I'm a cheapo! I used it for the first time yesterday
on my run and I burned 397 cal in 35 min. I was using my runkeeper app to get an idea of
calories burned. I figured it wasn't accurate bc I figured it calculates cal burned by distance
walked, avg pace and other variables. For the same workout, according to Runkeeper I only
burned 213 cal...sooo I'm hoping that my FT7 is accurate bc I like that # better. Lol

I've had a polar for 6 years and LOVE IT ! We changed the battery one time and that was it.

It has the elastic strap in back and plastic toward the front. Once it's on, in a matter of minutes, I couldn't tell it was on. I also kept it pretty tight due to zumba class.

It showed I burned 675-700 calories for zumba class (yes, I go all out). The instructor had a different one and showed she burned within 15 calories of mine during most classes.

I believe it is very accurate considering you put in all your personal information. And lost weight using those calories burned w/ eating correctly. Days I burned more calories, I could eat more, knowing I was still at my 500 calorie deficit.

I thought I would hate wearing a chest strap for my HRM, but honestly, after I put it on, I pretty much instantly forget I'm wearing it--so much so that I frequently go up for my shower after my run and realize I've forgotten to take it off. (FWIW, I have a Garmin.)

I've never had a problem with the chest strap... maybe yours is too lose, or do you have that all-plastic one someone told me about? I have a Polar ft40 and forget I'm wearing the strap after a couple min.

I am with you. I bought the new MIO Alpha. I love the concept and not wearing a chest strap which I loathe, but I don't feel I am getting accuracy. I used to have a Polar and I really liked it (except for the chest strap not staying in place which caused problems). I do feel it was more accurate than the MIO. Most people I've talked to with Polar really like it.

Do a web search for heart rate monitors USA. Huge variety and great prices.

I have a polar FT7 and I really love it. Prior to this I had a polar F6 and loved that one until I lost the chest strap. Polar brands are know for accuracy and a quality product, and everyone I know that has one loves them.

There are two potential sources of inaccuracy with an HRM.

The first is that the HRM is not counting your heart rate accurately.

The second is that your heart rate diverges in some way from the 'average'. The equations that convert your heart rate into a calorie burn are based on broad population averages. And like most averages, they are a pretty good estimate for 1/3 of the population, somewhat useful for another 1/3 and less useful for another 1/3. High blood pressure and some medications can lead to an increased heart rate over what the exercise itself justifies, other medications (eg. beta blockers) lead to a lower heart rate.

If the inaccuracies of your HRM are due to the first cause, then a different HRM may well measure more accurately.

But given that most of the heart rate/calorie equations come out of the same basic research, switching to a different HRM is unlikely to fix inaccuracies due to the second cause.

I have a Polar FT7 with chest strap and I believe it is fairly accurate for my walk, treadmill use. I got it from Amazon for $65. Says it's for men but I don't see a difference for women to wear it.

hmm i have a polar hrm that i absolutely adore- if you go for one of the older models, you should be able to get one well within your price range- i think the polar7 should be somewhere around there. i recommend getting one with a chest strap & transmitter- they are more accurate. i do put my weight in a little lower than it is to compensate for any over-estimate of calories burned, but i find it extremely motivating to get a good estimate of what i've burned!

fwiw, i find that the fitbit is pretty accurate in calories burned if i'm walking outside, but it's not if i'm using a cardio machine (elliptical, for me).

I'm thinking about getting a heart rate monitor. I have a fitbit one that I love and wear daily but; I've recently started a C25K and I like the idea of being able to see how many calories I burned after my workouts. I bought a Mio Motiva a few years ago but I didn't feel like it was as accurate as all of the reviews stated. I'm looking to spend $100 or less. Anybody have any suggestions or advice on what kind to get? Do you have a heart rate monitor? If so what kind and are you happy with it?
